Started my 2CV today for the first time in 4 days (been busy working at home) started fine then half way into Stafford (about 3 miles from the house) it dropped down to firing on one cylinder, I pulled over and did some head scratching then restarted and proceeded back home at 20mph on all of 301cc. On entering my street and starting to accelerate up it in 1st, the other cylinder kicked back in and scared the living Jesus out of me. So, I had a check of everything, coil was fine and plugs were sparking, fuel line was ok and filter was clean, timing was spot on, carb jets were all clean and float level was correct, airflow was good and unrestricted... So once again I started my trip into Stafford, made it up the A34 no probs, came up to a very busy round about in Stafford, went to pull off and she cut out! Agggh! Took about 30 seconds to restart (felt like 3 hours) and we were back on one cylinder! Crawling down a 50mph road into Stafford at 20 with the hazards on, cylinder number two suddenly decided to wake up and we were off again... So for the rest of the day the car has stayed on two cylinders but misfiring and cutting out aplenty, I have Xmas shopping to do and am going away for new year, this is my only car... AAAGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Car has been my daily for 6 years, could leaving it for 4 days really turn it into a bag of poo?! Any ideas?

Worth wiping your leads, just in case something's interfereing there...
Anyway, sounds like something in your ignition is not right - either a plug or lead is breaking down, and starting to track. Time to replace the consumables!

as above, new leads and plugs never hurt, made 2 of my cars turn from non runners into peaches. of the non edible variety. condensation also a good one there! I'm guessing plugs btw as you don't say you checked them!

2CV's are great... 'down to one cylinder', legend. ;D
Oh... good luck with it, I vote damaged lead too. Had seven of these and frickin love them. What other mods are you running? I used to play with twin carbs, drove a turbo one and even had a Mahle big bore kit once, 652cc... ;D

A few mods but nothing too drastic... Has 9:1 barrels and pistons, thirty thou skimmed off the gas flowed heads, racing cam, lightened flywheel, low ratio gearbox (Dyane) BMC DIA induction system (not fitted at the moment as I broke the filter housing), harley davidson coil, BX GTi seats, 80mph 2cv club speedo (still goes off the damn clock though)
Also have a whole host of motorbike gauges that will be fitted at some point.
I think thats about it, apart from normal 2CV mods like the galvanized chassis, shes still a complete rot box though ;D

My girlfriends Golf started missing. I replaced the dizzy cap and rotor arm to no avail, replaced the plugs - bingo. Even though they were all a nice browny colour on the electrodes . Puzzling. But yeah, as ^^^ them lot have said, replace all the HT bits and you'll solve the problem with any luck

Whatever happened to "No distributor, no sweat"? I find that at this time of year the damp is the killer. WD40, hot air and wiping with bogroll.

Whatever happened to "No distributor, no sweat Unfortunately they do still need a coil I supppose I need to get off my back side this morning and do something, I may to end up going to *spits* halfords for the leads Anyone know why the price of Castrol GTX has shot up so much? Last time I brought a 5ltr of 15w40 High Milage I paid 12 quid, now I cant find any under 17!! Anyone have a favorite alternative brand of motor oil?

I'd go for plugs. With the wasted spark system (fires twice in the four stroke cycle) 2CVs can get through them a bit. My last pair lasted a mere 5000 miles before I started to get er, starting problems.
The only time I've had the misfire you report though, I managed to burn out one of the HT leads on the exhaust! May be worth doing the old "spray water onto HT leads with bonnet up at night" trick to see if you get pretty sparks.
May also be carb icing as it is getting colder. What sort of driving were you doing at the time?50-60mph cruising is an ideal recipe for carb trouble.

I never got up that fast before it cut out unfortunately, had the grille muff on and let her warm up for about 5 mins before setting off.
Carb icing ive had before going down the M1 in a horrendous snow storm a few years back, does kind of feel the same.
Just been outside and grabbed the leads to take a sufty, one of then has either been rubbing or melting on the manifold, however nothing is exposed just has an obvious area of rubbing.
Will replace the leads anyway and change plugs...

If it has been rubbing, that may be enough to deflect the current away from the plug. Anyone who has ever grabbed a HT lead will tell you that the electricity can still get out!

Hope not. As much as I love 2CVs, I love RR because no one make really attracts more of a crowd than any other. We love everything!!
