I know most would consider them not to be retro, and I'd much rather have a mk1, but what are people's views of the MK2 MR2? A friend is considering getting one and I thought I'd ask you lot as you seem a nice bunch of people!
I saw the recent thread showing that online MR2 magazine and that was a very good link. But if anyone could offer any advice or point him in the right direction for more resources it'd be appreciated.
Cheers.

www.IMOC.co.uk is where ya can find the MR2 forum for any further assistance. The Mk2 is the only one I have not been in. they got slated for being lardy when they came out compared to the didi basic mk1 but people such as PPC mag gave a good write up recently as its a good time to buy. They have a more powerful engine (that mk1ers love to steal ) which is good, Id have one although i'm never conviced if I love or hate the styling, bit of both. keep an eye out for rust and any obvious mechanical issues you notice. watch out for chaved up ones and smashed ones. generally a lot of potential, and although still popular (too popular?) the Mk2 came out the same year as mine, so pretty retro kind of.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

There are several revisions (rev1 upto rev6 or something). Rev1 turbo's had about 220bhp and were generally slated and condemned as being dangerous because they oversteered at the limit rather than understeered. I believe rev2's sorted this 'fault'. Rev3's and onwards came with more power (241bhp if I remember), uprated suspension and an LSD and were generally regarded as better. I think the UK non turbo versions had around 170bhp.
I wanted one of these a while back. Still do actually.

I know a couple of people who've had them and they are very much a Toyota in terms of reliability. Unsuprising given that it amounts to a mid-engined Carina.
Personally, I don't like them at all. I don't like the looks that much and they are just not my sup of tea. I'd guess that if you do like the looks enough to buy one, you probably won't be disappointed.

I know the 3SGE needs to use an oil filter that doesn't allow the oil to drain back, being if you use one where the oil does drain back, it doesn't take long for the engine to develop a nasty knocking noise... of doom!
Other than that, from what I've seen/heard/experienced. They pretty decent.
