You know how it is.... You and your girlfriend are on e-bay looking for parts for her E28/are there any other E28s for sale?/how much are Series Land Rovers going for...? When you find a car you've always wanted, but have put on the back burner for a while due to other projects and saving up for a holiday, for a price you can't quite believe.... Add into the mix your girlfriend saying 'but it, it's gorgeous' and one bid later, you've added a car to your collection. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271032593739?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1434.l2649#ht_500wt_1204So tomorrow, we're heading out from Norfolk to Basingstoke in the Peugeot 405 estate (pending expedition vehicle) to go and pick it up.... I can't work out if I'm excited or just dreading the M25!!! What do you all think? I can't actually remember the last time I saw a vehicle before buying it! I'm sure you've all got your own stories about e-bay and car buying journeys! Ian

Great car,
i do look forward to wednesday / thursday post deliveries to see what i have brought in the early hours drunkeness ebay rampage!
The best one i've ever heard was big jimmy ringing me up to ask to borrow my trailer on a friday afternoon. The reason being he had placed the highest bid on ebay for a lexus LS400(?) around 200 miles away with no recollection of bidding and the seller ringing him and demanding he pick it up next day or he's reporting him to Flea bay.

The advert screams 'nice bloke, nice car'... if that makes sense to anyone.
I've bought an awful lot of cars from ebay in the last few years, and a lot of it is down to writing style, pictures, and the 'feel' of the ad.
I reckon its a goodun.

Thanks for all the comments and stories! Keep 'em coming! ;D OK, so, 12 hours and 400 miles later, we're back! "Nice bloke, nice car"? Well that seems to be true! The chap I bought it off did indeed seem to be a really nice guy (in the hour I spent with him) and he's has had the car for 5 years, but it's been off the road for the last 3. I'm really pleased with it, £770 for a car (+ 6 months tax) won't buy you very much (unless you're looking at the RR boards ) but I doubt the money's been turned into something that looks as good as this car does! I love how my W124 CE looks, but the W123 just looks gorgeous from any angle! The car seems very solid, underneath and the door pillars are spotless, there's some corrosion on the rear of the passenger door enclave and some scattered around here and there. The windscreen surround is rust free and only one small bubbling patch on the sunroof. The window rubber seals are all cracker and perished, so they'll need doing and some general tidying on the window surround is needed to prevent rust from taking hold. The exhaust is new! The boot and tailgate all seem to be fine. The windows all wind up and down fine, though the drivers needs a little encouragement to go smoothly. The sunroof works! The engine fires up without coughing and revs freely and seems to give the car a real 'get up and go' compared with my E220 W124 which needs you to put it in 'S' mode before it'll be as responsive. The ride is more 'wafts' then the 124 also, but still very comfortable! The temperature needle sat at about 80 degrees, then steadly climbed up to 100.... This lead me to think that we were heading for overheating, but it didn't climb any higher then that and sometimes dropped to about 95/90. I'm wondering if the thermostat needs changing or if the hot weather didn't agree with the car today. It does take about 15 miles to go from cold to 100 degrees though. The oil pressure gauge is a different story however. It goes up to about 2 when cold, dropping to 1 and a half when warm, then during prolonged driving it sits just above 1.... When the engine is sat at idle it drops to 0, but with warning light..... I'm wondering if it's not the most accurate or if the engine needs work.... As I said it starts and runs fine and there's no smoke that I've seen yet, time will tell (or one of you!) The speedo is reading high I think and the needle bounces under 10mph. Above 60mph there's a bad wheel shake, so the wheels need balancing. Everything else seems to be fine though, the brakes are very responsive and I'm surprised how good the lights are! The seats need work but are not uncomfortable. MPG is difficult to judge until I know how accurate the fuel gauge is, but I'd say I got above 30mpg on the journey back. When I was in Fleet services I saw 'Practical Classics' magazine is doing a buying feature on the W123. I didn't realise how desirable the coupes are and how high prices can climb!! Apparently parts can be difficult to sure and are expensive... Can anyone add their experience to this? That's about it for now, sorry if it's not very interesting! I'll get some picture up as soon as I can! Ian

Hi! Good to hear all went well! The price is indeed 'hot'. The Coupés will probably continue to climb in price. Most usual rust-spots are the front sill heads, firewall where it meets the frame rails (following from this inner sills and frame attachment points in the rear), wheel arches, under the headlights and in the bonnet hinge pockets, especially under the battery tray (acid and such causing corrosion). Also the rear frame rails can rott between bump stop & spring seat and lower inner wheel arch. The M102 engine does like to run a little hot in summer conditions. As long as it doesn't climb to 120 it's all OK. Does the fan kick in? Doing constant 'high' speeds (50-60+) the temperature should stay somwhere in the middle, though. Changing the thermostate will not hurt in any way Try a oil & filter change first. The factory user manual suggest as low as 1 bar when hot is acceptable. Many times a oil & filter change worked wonders on those engines Also change the little o-rings on the rod that holds down the filter housing lid (if the M102 has them - not sure right now). Above 1000RPM ipressure should climb, and under normal driving conditions/revs should be 3, though. But try a filter change first... If all fails, get a cheap W124 engine, change the sump over and never worry about the single row timing chain or valve adjustment anymore Cheers, Jan

I am self inflicted victim to this too...... after the Taunus transit lunched its' prop last weekend I got fed up and put in a stupid low bid on a badly photo'd belgian army truck. No ebay email, so no worries (I'd calmed down by then and wasn't as p*ss*d off with the van). 24hrs later - guy contacts me - mine for my max bid I had to then google the damn thing as I didn't know what it looked like ;D Ladies and gents - I present - the Renault Goelette: On reflection - is this the same type Ambulance Bryn bought ages back? Mines an open/canvas troop carrier apparently.

There are tons of info on these on French websites, they were called Goélette/Galion and another one I can't seem to remember, but the general name is the Renault 1000kg. Good luck with it

Ian, I did exactly the same thing with a thistle green 230ce a few years ago. I sold it on here (I think) when I realised it wouldn't fit in the garage Took me about a month to sort out the electric window switches but if yours has keep fit winders that's a bonus. Everything else was fine and it cruised like a dream. If the seats are beige cloth, I've still got a few bits of material kicking around somewhere if you need em for patches. Drop me a pm and good luck with it.
