V8's are awesome, as long as you can afford 12mpg. On LPG will still do 12mpg, but at half the cost. Most modifications are done to enhance their already legendary off-road ability and not for aesthetics.....having said that something like 75% of winches sold in this country are never used.... 4.2 Vogue SE with LPG conversion, air suspension and all the toys is a fantastic choice....really like driving an off-road armchair. If you want a bit more economy, the VM diesel in the late 80's models was underpowered and unreliable, later 200 and 300 TDi's are better, lots of dodgy aftermarket conversions but good if done well (GM 6.5 V8 diesels are awesome) Steer clear of the later P38, IMHO nowhere near as good, top-of-the range 4.6 V8 has a litany of problems, head gaskets, cracked blocks, detached liners etc etc....and the 2.5 BMW diesel is way out of it's depth, wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. If I was building one, would have to be a bobtailed 4-door with V8 and autobox with all the off-road toys.

great fun those things. Fuel consumption is a bit scary on the V8's but is made up for by the glorious noise. This one used to belong to forum pest and good friend o' mine Russell... Pretty shagged, but absolutely unstoppable in the mucky stuff.

There's a feature on the Heritage Motor Centre's Velar (first prod'n) in the new issue of C&SC if you want to learn any of the development story...

Look out for rust. The tailgate and chassis can go - the latter is as serious as you can imagine.
Engines are fairly solid - Efi V8s may get closer to 20mpg. Earlier twin carbs are tremendous fuel guzzlers.
If you are looking to off road, get rid of the front spoiler or it'll just get seriously mangled! I was in a Vogue SE going around Eastnor Castle's forests on my school work experience. That thing took a battering!

Used to love my G reg 3.9 EFi Vogue with LPG. Newer classics had anti roll bars as standard which improves on road handling no end. Limits off road use a little but not a great amount. Even without them, the handling isnt bad they just roll a lot. I used to get 10mpg on gas 12mpg on petrol, my wife used to be able to get closer to 17mpg on gas. I had a 100 litre tank in the boot and that gave me a range of 180mile. I did 400+mile per week so it wasnt ideal though As already said problems are rust (everywhere). Oxidation of the ally panels where they are joined to steel especially. Saggy head linings. Electrical gremlins. Generally long lived mine had 170,000 on it when I sold it and it still drove brilliantly. Oil leaks (everywhere) Parts are cheap, but maintenance is pretty high if they get a lot of use. There are plenty of specialists but you can save a lot of money if you do the work yourself.

Some of the 4x4 wheel suppliers do adaptor kits that mean you can run the later (P38 and the new RR) wheels....older ones are standard Land Rover PCD, and are a bit limiting when it comes to choice of aftermarket rims....most aftermarket stuff is either Japanese 6-bolt or later RR/Discovery2, which is still 5-stud but a smaller PCD. Oh....and expect to get stickered in car parks by Greenpeace soap-dodgers, who are becoming ever more vehement in their hatred of 4x4's Brian

Like them a lot Only probs I find with them is body roll and leather seats! In my mates one I used to slide about all over the show. Still if your the one holding the steering wheel,it doesn't really matter!

Just bear in mind that even the last RR Classics are now 11/12 years old, and once were an aspirational car for yuppies everywhere. Prices are now falling, and a great many have been bought by chavs and ragged senseless. Best to pay top dollar for something with known history and provenance than a tarted-up money pit.
Best to buy on condition, not age, check EVERYWHERE for rust, under the rear carpet (the rear floor rusts for England), rear crossmember, upper AND lower tailgate, rear chassis rails either side of the fuel tank, outriggers, sills, bottom of the b-posts, rear wheel arches/door shuts, front inner wings, door frames, bonnet....the bits around the engine/gearbox are usually fine (there's a saying in Land-Rover Land....'if it doesn't leak oil then it's empty'). While you're underneath check the chrome swivels on each end of the front axles for signs of pitting/wear/leaks. These are a swine to fix. Check also for any damage to crossmembers etc which would point to it having had a hard off-road life. Remember that just about EVERY item is available for these, so wrecks are quite easy to semi-disguise with some new trim/respray etc.
Check engine for correct coolant and any signs of water leaks, check oil filler for any sign of head gasket trouble. Make sure transmission is working OK including low box and difflock if fitted (later ones with viscous coupling don't have a difflock). Check power steering for leaks (PAS steering box £200...ouch).
Leather trim is fantastic, but expensive to repair/replace, headlinings are reknowned for falling down (mine's missing hahahaha).....the end is listless!
Good luck....remember if in ANY doubt, walk away...there are plenty about.
Brian
