I'm attempting to be a motoring journalist - I haven't quite achieved Clarkson status yet (people still like me!) but am hoping things will improve in the New Year.
Previously worked in IT. You can guess how much fun that was!

I'm fortunate in that I do for a living what I'd probably do for fun if I spent my days flipping burgers. I'm a software developer and I work for a specialist search engine marketing software company. I've worked for my fair share of idiots in my time, I'm a dotcom survivor. My advice is to be mobile. If your boss is an idiot, don't wait to be dumped upon, move on to pastures new.

I drive a 7.5 tonne truck for a company who specialise in superplastic aluminium thermoforming, mainly for the automotive/aerospace industries. We make stuff (and I get to visit regularly) Morgan, Aston-Martin, Bentley, Spyker, Rolls-Royce, Airbus......our sister firm in Riverside, CA made the outer panels for the new GT40 I've worked for them for 4 years, prior to that I did a couple of years agency driving (I'm actually qualified to drive anything that isn't articulated, have driven everything from dustbin trucks to 26 tonne fridge wagons and double-deck 6-wheeled medical waste carriers)...before that I drove for 14 years for a major sportsgoods supplier with over 300 shops all over the UK, but they went bust in 2001. Prior to that I spent 3 years as a Certificated Bailiff back in the mid-late 1980's.....could write a book about that job, would make your toes curl.... Also work from home one day a weekend as an on-call recruitment consultant for the family-owned business, specialising in healthcare, driving and industrial staff.....which is why I spend at least one day a weekend on here writing curse word in between answering the phone! I used to work in web design (incidently one of the companies I worked for was with herald948 and got bored of the same old same old, took a leap when I was 29 to study on a full time car design course in Coventry. 4 years later I have 6 months left, and absolutely no regrets. I would go for training first, or maybe search local companies to become an apprentice. Many companies pay for your training while they employ you. Do it now or you'll regret it!

Do it now or you'll regret it! its nice that you think i'm young enough to be an apprentice ;D BMW have already chucked me off their apprentice technicians scheme for being too old ,i suppose at 37 i probably am.but to be fair i didn't ask to go on it,i applied for a job in parts, the dork manager never read my covering letter.

Great news that DaveRapper is doing the right thing, woohoo, make sure the figures balance and it will be happy times TRG, while I was in West Yorkshire, I temped fixing problems for a Bank too (interesting yet boring - learned that they can make big balls ups, promote the wrong people to patronise everyone else, and still make loads of money! ) I work helping people with their multimedia problems as a technician, and make films about cool cars - more info on that in the future....

I'm a parts supervisor for a Porsche dealer......basically a parts advisor that stands in for the manager for not a lot extra money ! It's a good job,not many dealers in the country so it's very niche and i get to see lots and lots of rear engined cars....IT'S THE LAW ! Previous to that i worked for Skoda which believe it or not was not the ideal job i thought it would be because new Skuds are very, very boring !
