Hi Guys
I`ve recently bought a 4 spoke Momo steering wheel,
The spokes are partly vinyl covered and anodized (i think) black,
I really like the look of them with polished spokes i should be able to remove the vinyl quite easily but will i be able to remove the black anodizing and polish the spokes??
If so any tips on removing the black?
Cheers Adrian

If you're right and it is anodized then the best way to remove it will be to use Costic Soda (as in the cleaning stuff). Just mix some up fairly strong and fill a container big enough to get the steering wheel in there, chuck it in and leave it until it's done it's stuff. It'll leave a pretty crappy finish though, so you'll need to use some traditional elbow grease to get it up to a polished finish. Only real downside is that it'll remove the tough surface of the anodizing, so it'll scratch easier and dull over time like any other untreated aluminium. There's no way around that if you want the colour gone though, unless you get it clear anodized after you've polished it.

Thanks for the reply The rim of the wheel is wooden would the caustic soda damage it in any way? I know it will remove the varnish but that needs doing anyway but I'm worried it will damage the wood or the glue holding the wheel together Cheers Adrian

Chances are it actually wont touch the varnish. It's doesn't normally effect paint. I couldn't say on the wood though, maybe try some other wood in it just to see? Wouldn't hurt to buy some as it's handy around the house anyway.
