Such a lovely car this, I was horrified to see the pictures after the blaze. Don't be disheartened though, be thankful that the fire was nowhere near as bad as it could have been, the car is saveable, and you and your house are safe. Insurance companies seem to make these sort of things far more of a nightmare than they already are, but keep your head up, and you'll work something out. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress

What a painfully scary experience. Glad to see the damage isn't irrevocable, but not easy to sort regardless. Best wishes towards it.

The value was 'agreed' as part of the classic policy with Admiral. It involved sending various photographs and filling in a form but the car wasn't inspected. I have been assigned a 'File Handler' who I am emailing to ask for advice on how to proceed.
Thank you again for the support, I really appreciate it. I am determined to keep her alive.
The damage doesn't seem to be disastrous, the only distortion is in the boot skin. It's just going to be a waiting game now I think while I try to sort the insurance. I can't afford to repair it without a payout but I am pretty sure I can do it myself for under £1500, so we shall see...

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Have an update.
The insurance company organised for an 'engineer' from an approved repairer to inspect the car who was completely dismissive and made it pretty clear that he simply wasn't interested in having the work. In the end he submitted a quote for £2500 to simply apply the top coat provided I do all the prep work, mechanical work, strip the car and supply all the parts which I'd have to fit.
I wasn't at all impressed and even less impressed when I discovered that despite being assured time and time again that the car wouldn't be taken from my property without consulting first the car was classified as a class C write off and a salvage truck dispatched the same day. Thankfully it hadn't turned up by the time I got home from work was was able to call the insurance company who sorted it out but denied ever ordering it.
After this I managed to get a new case handler who appears to be more competent but is sticking to the company policy of promising call back in an hour or the next morning but never bothering. He did offer a cash in lieu settlement if I agreed to having the car inspected again to check that it is safe to repair which I agreed to.
After a week I finally got a text last night saying the inspector would be over to see me at 11 this morning which he confirmed over the phone at 10. He arrived at 12.30 and seemed to be pretty helpful and was happy to try to stop the insurance company from writing it off as a Cat A which he felt was now highly probable (not sure how) and mentioned that in the case of a fire cash in lieu didn't apply.
And that is the situation. Completely contradicting opinions, incompetence, wasted time and no closer to a payout which lets me keep the car.
Rant over.

I've taken the axle off it now so it's a bit harder for them to take . I have every intention of keeping it regardless of the outcome, even if it can't go back on the road the shell is COMPLETELY rust free and all of the trim and mechanical are in very good order. As for going mad it's got to the point where I was seriously considering buying an XJ-S if I can't have my Dolly back. I'm pretty sure you can be sectioned for that...

I can completely relate with Jag lust, so don't worry about it. I couldnt be more impractical if i tried but a jag will still be my next purchase for sure.
Ive also got the same HL of the same age, mines needed far more welding though...
Keep us informed.

Hope you get things sorted soon - Insurance companies always seem difficult to deal with, but just stand your ground...

is it weird that I kinda like it burnt?! mechanically fix it up, and leave the paint - it tells a story, and adds a certain character.
my mum had a 1850 hl auto in green when i was a kid, which i have fond memories of. it got sold to the son of a family friend when it got too old, who took it off the road to restore it, but i don't think it ever made it back to the road :-(

Hope you get things sorted soon - Insurance companies always seem difficult to deal with, but just stand your ground... That's what I'm doing, it's very tiring but I think they are starting to take me seriously. To being with I had to explain the concept of a classic car and why I wanted to keep it! First thing the assessor asked was "why did you put it out?".

The paint was the only thing stopping it being A1 so I'm taking this as a chance to get it better than before.

I just heard from the insurance company and it's still going to be a Cat C at this rate which I really don't want. This is because the bushes were damaged making the damage 'structural'. What the hell is the point in my IMecE approved degree to become a qualified engineer when there are people out there who can call themselves engineers who will write a car off on structural grounds based on some damaged rubber?! I despair. At least it can go back on the road though. I've started to make some repairs anyway to keep the mojo going as I've been loosing motivation. I've started by putting some paint stripped on the C-pillars to get the damaged paint and residue off and then DAing it back to bare metal. This is now primed with some U-Pol acid etch and a bit of high build. I'm sure this will cause even more problems further down the line but there was rust coming through and I just couldn't bare it any more. I love this car! James Edit: more photos Before After Before After And with a bit of rattle can-age it could be looking pretty good fairly fast... I found an old can left over from the first Dolomite and it matched pretty nicely before running out.

You're very kind! As for the mini, thats a definite case of something i should have kept. Who knew that being vaguely sensible and going without a 70s car could be such a harrowing and miserable experience. Never again!

I've had moments when I've considered saying goodbye to my Mini as I've never driven it and it's a long way off being on the road but then I remember how much money and effort I've put into it and how awesome it will be in sandglow, looking all standard and original, waiting to blow away all the chavtastic saxos with it's Nissan twincam... Back to the Dolomite. Stripped a load more paint off back to bare metal, U-Pol zinc primed and then spray puttied... It could be the paint fumes but something is telling me this is an awesome idea... The insurance company are now back to saying it's a Cat C and will pay out 'soon'. I guess that's the best I can hope for. Poor old girl. James

At least all is not lost...!
I have complete sympathy for you, the majority of insurance companies out there just don't understand the 'love' do they...?! Keep up with the repair work, that Dolly is going to look as bright as a button very soon I don't doubt...!!!
With regards to the two-tone look, GO FOR IT...
