Well I've had this car for a few months now but figured that it may go down okay on this forum as well as the Dolomite one. It's a 1850HL automatic. The cars is completely rust free but is in need of some tlc to get perfect. I bought it unseen back in March on the Isle of Man where it's lived it's entire life and drove it back to Sussex without any real problems. Since getting it home I've had to do some small jobs to get it road worthy including rebuilding the alternator and starter motor, removing and flushing the radiator, converting to halogen headlights with relays and rebuilding the carbs. Car when it got back: Carbs being cleaned up with neat squash - worked really well! I also modified the circuit board in the radio so that I can plug an iPod in The latest job I've been doing has been to convert a Mini distributor to fit instead of the dreadful AC Delco. I had a spare Delco and Mini dizzy on the shelf so I cut them both in half and welded them together. The shafts are the same diameter so it seems to have worked perfectly. I'm now working to get an MOT on it as soon as possible and then register it in this country because my dad has done his knee in and really needs an auto to drive about in. I've never done this before, how difficult is it? James

It's on the road at last! I took it for it's MOT on Thursday morning and it failed when the indicator stalk fell out during the test again and one of the front brakes bound. Luckily they had a a slot for a retest that afternoon so I rushed back to get it all sorted. I tried some different glue on the stalk, I think the aruldite I'd used was past it's best cos it hadn't set. On the brake side of things I discovered one pad was falling apart with only half the friction material left and the other very worn. The car had come with a load of spares including some 2nd hand worn but useable pads so I popped them in. At first the brake wasn't working at all but after a bit of use it stopped jerking so hard to the left, enough to pass the MOT anyway. My dad used it to go to work yesterday and didn't have any problems other than the uneven braking which hasn't really improved since the MOT. I think I need to get hold of some new pads today and re-bleed the brakes. That should get rid of the terrible squealing too! James

For the bother, unless there's something wrong with your engine I don't think it's worth it or an extra 150cc. The Dolomite I had before had an 1850 in it and I can't tell the difference really. I'd spend the money on a decent exhaust manifold or some TR7/Sprint HS6 carbs, that'll be where the extra power is.

Sounds interesting... Do they come with a manifold as well? How much are you looking for?

Just over a week has passed since I finally started driving thanks to the mad DVLA import procedure. The MPG wasn't great to start with but improved with a tune up but over the past week got really bad. Further tuning didn't do anything and there was no obvious leaking.
After spending all afternoon cleaning it on Friday with a friend I drove home and watched the needle fall, only just making it back. Looking underneath I found that one of the rubber hoses had badly perished leaking a small amount of fuel so I got a pump and emptied the tank out into a jerry can before setting to work on the pipe. By this time it was dark so I had a lamp. Only a small amount of fuel came out into a bottle then WOOSH.
I had a fire extinguisher at hand which got it out but 30 seconds later it auto ignited and really went up. I ran out into the road and stopped a car to get them to call 999 before going back and getting the hose. I managed to get the fire out before the fire brigade came but the damage is done.

The tank had been 'welded' and then covered in a layer of fibreglass. I don't know if that was leaking as well but I'm not impressed. Although it didn't go up - the sender float is still intact, the tank has warped, as has the boot lid. All the pipework underneath is gone but the handbrake still works and there is not distortion to the quarter panels. The back seats have also survived with only a minor burn on the under side. The axle has silly float and makes a nasty noise when turned but it may have been going anyway.

yeah i was gonna say the tank looks like its been lead caulked, which is a legit repair. but covering it in fibreglass, don't see the point, stone chip paint wouldve done.
anyway, thats irrelevant. it seems salvageable (not sure if your enthusiasm to repair it is though ?) will it be the end of the car?

The car is really important to me so letting it go isn't an option but I'm having to fight the insurance company. I have refused to let them 'salvage' it and they have agreed to let me get quotes from a garage but won't let me quote for repairing it myself so I don't see how it can't be written off. I had agreed value of £2000 but I don't see any garage being able to sort all the problems for less than that with labour.

yeah i think the work has to be certified, but theres nothing stopping you sourcing second hand panels and deleting some of the garages labour to make the quote more favourable (to the insurance company)
that's what i did on GTE no.1

Did you have to get the work done at the garage or were you able to do the work yourself? I can't afford to pay extra labour!

basically bought the panels, stripped the car myself and delivered it to approved bodyshop myself. so all they did was prep and paint. bought the cost down to something more favourable for a settlement

Gutted for you mate. I'm not involving the insurance company with my Avenger, they'll definitely write it off. Hope you can get the parts to fix it

Thank you for the support, I've been following your Avenger build for some time, best of luck to you. I am hoping to get away with a partial respray oh just the rear and door. I'll try and get some quotes. The car has agreed valuation of £2000, does anyone know what would make it a write off? I like the idea of getting most of the work done myself and just getting it finished and 'signed off' by an approved garage although a nice payout would be better James

when you say agreed value do you mean it was inspected and agreed in writing when you insured it, or do you mean the question "how much is the car worth" when you ring up to insure it ?
in any case, if its the agreed value (proper) then £2000.01p repair cost would write it off.
