I bought this off mike on here a little under a month ago. he had replaced the cambelt, water pump and a core plug on the head to cure a small water leak, plus the fuel pump. the engine is essentially a golf engine mounted the other way round so easy on parts.
it soon became apparent in my ownership the short MOT it came with wasnt the most legitimate. the suspension was horrific (badly chopped springs that fell out when jacked up, blown shocks), the brakes were shagged and heavily corroded, and the rear suspension fell off after two weeks! the exhaust, although recent, was also damaged where the mid box had been hit.
I de-mid-boxed the exhaust and welded it up, tucking it up at the same time to increase ground clearance to sort the exhaust problems.
its had custom one-off coilovers made out of a mixture of FK and TA technix parts, which have corrected steering geometry, and keeper springs so they don't dislocate. its now also had the tracking done, which it hadnt been before. the handling and ride now is a revelation to what it was before- it runs straight, can be steered with one hand, and doesnt crash and bang over every catseye!
it has had extensive reconstructive surgery to the rear suspension trailing arm mounts to sort out some hidden corrosion I found after the rear suspension parted company with the car. its all done to replicate factory construction, and is done in 2mm plate so its nice and strong. this alone took the best part of a week to do!
new parts its had-
front discs
front pads
front flexis
rear flexis
half a dozen new hard lines, done in kunifer.
lower ball joint
longer front wheel studs, new zinc plated rears.
20mm front wheel spacers.
the coilovers
the banded steels and tyres, along with spacers and new bolts.
(cambelt, waterpump and fuel pump also done very recently, which I think I have receipts for).
then, I made up a set of banded steels for it. they're mk2 golf driver 14" steels, banded to 7.5" fronts 8.5" rears, sandblasted, then painted in gloss black POR-15. rear tyres are 175/65R14, fronts are 165/60R14. they're budgets but matched paired, all with 6mm+ tread.
ou want to see more detail of the stuff ive done, my build thread is here-
retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=132772
as for the rest of the car, its pretty good. there is no other major corrosion other than the lower front edges of the inner wings. the interior is tidy enough, the paintwork is passable but does need a bit of tidying up really. I will add a load more pics of this during the week to show general condition. it will also hopefully be at the gathering if you want to have a nosey at it.
just to add, I have all the missing side trim, and have found a source in the states for replacement clips. I also have another good front wing without any rot, but its blue so I havent fitted it.

reason for sale?
I'm just a bit bored now ive sorted all the problems tbh. its now a nice car to drive, but I'm looking for something older I can run daily as I now have a much sorter commute. a proper tax exempt classic, any condition as long as its on the road with T+T. so I'm open for swaps but only for something interesting- none of the modern dross that keeps getting offered as swaps on here. I was in negotiation to swap it for a rover p4 but thats sold now, so would quite like something along those lines.
otherwise, its a cash sale.
