Hi all, and can anybody help. The car is fidgety at speeds over 50mph and you can feel it moving all over the place (feels like fishtailing, but without the trailer). Its fitted with aftermarket 17inch rims which have 205/40R17 tyres on.
Any ideas? as this is the car thats coming down to the Gathering, so i need to make sure its safe (about a 600 mile round trip)

Without knowing what car it is, it'd be impossible to diagnose. Could be anything from shagged tyres to borked suspension bushes or shocks. First check the stupid stuff like tyre pressures and condition of sidewalls (inside and out, my sister's BMW Mini Cooper S developed a similar trait last week which was down to a whacking great bulge in one of the inner sidewalls) then work methodically from there.

Unlikely, but I just wanted to add aero to the list above ^^ losing undertrays on my mx5 made it noticeably less stable than normal on the motorway.

IIRC these things had a habit of knocking out rear suspension bushes. A guy at work has the turbo version and it went through them like no tomorrow until he polybushed it (Superpro I think, remember him telling me it was pretty expensive).

Yeah, my old one was a bit wandery due to tired bushes on the rear. Iirc it was difficult to get the bushes at the time except from Toyota. Has the suspension been lowered? (I can't remember from the original advert and it sold before I had chance to go and see it) - it might be that the dampers are weak as well? My starting point would be getting some standard wheels to try...

Has it ever been in an accident ? I had a Montego that was the same at speed and found out it had been in an accident. Although repaired the suspension was slightly out of alignment. Same effect woudl happen with worn subframe mounting bushes as well as suspenion links / bushes.

Sounds like the geometry is moving about. Probably due to mullered bushes as suggested above

First thing to check has got to be the simple things like tyres and wheel balancing cars can be really nasty to drive if they lose a couple of balance weights. Then start looking at suspension bushes.

Going to take the wheels off to repaint them, and will see what everything looks like then. Also going to get the tracking done

Had a mate with one of these and the front drive shaft snapped in the middle of the hub! Ended up in somebodys front wall at about 90mph. No prior damage and had it as a very low milage import.

do powerflex make the bushes for theese cars ive just fitted some powerflex bushes to my saab wow the difference is amazing powerflex == purply colour really good for the price i paid 35 quid for f+r arb bushes superflex = red colour genaerally quite hard compound sligtly cheaper but not as good really superpro = nice ride not too jiggly quite pricey recomended for road cars that do trackdays good compromise but if you did all the bushes with theese it would mount up to alot of money i would get powerflex if they do them for yur car unless owners advise of other options mate

Powerflex don't, Superflex only do some of them, but SuperPro do at a price. I remember the guy at work saying it had cost him a fair whack but he's had no trouble with it since.

Not true. Superflex bushes on my MR2 are very good, definitely not red (they're purple) and definitely not as hard as the super pro ones that I have also seen. do powerflex make the bushes for theese cars ive just fitted some powerflex bushes to my saab wow the difference is amazing powerflex == purply colour really good for the price I paid 35 quid for f+r arb bushes superflex = red colour genaerally quite hard compound sligtly cheaper but not as good really superpro = nice ride not too jiggly quite pricey recomended for road cars that do trackdays good compromise but if you did all the bushes with theese it would mount up to alot of money I would get powerflex if they do them for yur car unless owners advise of other options mate

I was about to say, Superflex IME have been the great compromise between rubber bushes that are too soft and fall apart and cheap poly bushes which tend to fall apart and generally give you a horrid ride. Almost like modern day OEM bushes for classic cars . Powerflex seem to be hit and miss but they are cheap(ish) and cheerful. Back on topic. What tyres does it have on the back? Besides a poor tyre issue I would also be looking at dampers (probably due on a car that age) along with the bushes).
