Now then all, As I'm sure some of you will know, Ive bought a daft American barge, an '83 Chrysler NewYorker 5th Avenue to be precise. Its packing a smogged up 318, and therein lies the issue. I simply can't get it to run properly. So far its had: - New airfilter
- New plugs
- New cap
- New rotor arm
- New coil
- New plugleads
- New fuel filter
- Carb rebuild
- Fuel lines blown through...
Now, I've spoken to Steve at Oldcott motors and he says he has carbs (pre-smog) for a 318, one of which is still attached to the engine in a dodge van, so I can see/hear it running and could get a matching distributor. Does anybody know anything about these 318's? Should this other carb work and distributor work? Should I be ok just blocking up the vacuum lines (there lots of 'em) Help is very much appreciated as I REALLY want this at RRG..

Is it a 2 barrel or 4 barrel? I don't have any experience with that particular engine, but in general, 1980s American smog carbs seem to work fine with some of the less useful vacuum lines disconnected and plugged. It really depends on what they do. Obviously you need to keep the vacuum advance line to the distributor, and if the carb has any vacuum brakes on it (most of them do), then you need to keep those. The vacuum brakes are canisters connected to a choke linkage, usually only on the secondary(ies), which helps stop the mixture from leaning out when you floor it without the need for a secondary accelerator pump. This is a Carter 2-barrel, which clearly shows a vacuum brake and line on it. If you have this carb then you should keep this canister and line. Apart from that, you should only need the vac advance signal and the brake booster line. PCV isn't really a bad thing either as long as the valve works and none of the hoses leak. Hopefully someone who actually knows these carbs will be along shortly to provide some useful info! Best of luck with it. My Holden with a 2-barrel "Var-a-jet II" has never really run right, but I just put up with it and drive around the problems.

Its the computer controlled "tamperproof" one you have though. Great when they work right and a dog when they don't. The fault may be in the ECU and there is no way that I know to flash a code from it to find out. Thats real "beta release" level computer control there.
In my opinion you are on the money getting rid of all that. I have a 318 with Carter BBD in my '68 Fury. Compared to either of the 318 Fifth Avenues I had its a doddle to work on and reliable as anything. Once you get all that "Lean Burn Computer" curse word off its way easier
