Hi, Just joined this forum last night, and started getting an inordinate amount of SPAM sent to the email address I supplied. I haven`t joined any other site recently, and this was noticeable immediately. Any thoughts, and anyone know how to contact site owner/manager??? Drew

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Kiltyarse,.. go into your profile (button up there ^^^^) and make sure you email address is set to be hidden.
Spam harvesting programs will grab any public email address on just about any website. I feel your pain as I get a steady stream of spam because my email address is all over the place.

Maybe because your email address is 'public' in your profile it can get harvested by spambots?
I do not know.

Too slow.
Does anyone else have the mental picture of mechanised tins of spam, gaily singing old shanties as they reap sheafs of email addresses blowing serenly in the late summer sun for their fake-viagra-peddling slave owner??
No?

I've not noticed anything out of the ordinary... I'm moderator of a Yahoo Group though and because I'm not allowed to hide the email address (it just routes from xxxxx-owner@groups.yahoo.com) i get dozens per day

I find it very useful getting spam mail, I'm constantly stunned by all the amazing offers that I'd be missing out on otherwise.

I seem to have been getting quite a lot over the past few months and I`ve never had a problem before that. I`ve had the same email address for the past 8 year

Again, your email address isn't hidden Phoenix. Mine is. Having had to give up my last account due to Spamage (after publishing it on a few websites) I'm protecting my new one!

I know it isnt hidden but it only seems to be the last 6 month when I have been receiving spam, and I have been on here over 2 years. I havent found it particularly troublesome as the spam filters I have set up deal with most of it.

Might just be that the scummy spammers have finally found a way around your spam filters?
I started getting rubbish within a week of publishing my e-address!

No I just set the spam filters up after I started receiving spam Never had a need for them before. There are a couple of forums where my email is visible so I am obviously being spambotted from one of them Anyway lets get back on topic

Here's a tip for you retro-ers - buy a domain name and then route all your mail through it, that way whenever you give you email address anywhere you can change it to suit so your sign-up name on here might be retro@blahblah.co.uk but your address for ebay might be ebay@blahblah.co.uk, which allows you to trace where someone got your address from. A domain name from somewhere like www.UK2.net is super-cheap and the basic email diversion is part of the package.

if you have a gmail address you can do tricks like:
myname+retrorides@gmail.com
and then filter based on the "+retrorides part to see where your spam is coming from.
