For some odd reason an old advert popped into my head today... that Fiat one where the footage of the factory robots is set to classical music (I think it was when they opened the fully robotized FIRE plant in the '80's). Remember the VW ones where the cars dropped down next to a guy in a white room? Maybe for the Mk 3 Golf? What other long forgotten TV ads are there?

Funnily enough, I thought of both those adverts as I read the title of this thread! I also remember the incredibly jingoistic Metro one, where they all drive in formation to the edge of the cliffs at Dover, "a British car to beat the world" And there the Capri 2.8i one, where a bolt of lightning hits the tailgate "The new Capri, it goes like..."

I know it's not a TV ad but when we were moving house I found a torn up smudged old Puegeot 104 advert on the back of a newspaper cutting about a scrapyard my dad used to work in (that's why he kept the cutting for all those years, it had his picture on it.) I can't remember what the ad said, but it had a picture of a nice looking dark coloured sporty 104 on alloys (I forget what kind) and made references to it's performance I think. Maybe the elusive 104 ZS model?

I remember the Capri one now! I'll have to try and catch Swiss Tony to see those car ads Oldskool. What about the Ford ad for the new Cosworth (I think) - an old fella (probably someone dead famous but I was a youngster and wouldn't know ) goes into a dusty garage and says "I'm gonna make you great again".... cue cheesy Rocky music... I can't really remember what car it was advertising though. It could have been the Sierra Cosworth, or even the Mk 5 Escort Cossie although I'm sure I was quite young when this was on TV!

Yep it was for the RS2000.....new beside old. I remember being surprised at how much taller and narrower the old car was.

Blimey! Mk5 Escort - It wasn't as long ago as I thought then.... I think that Peugeot ad was for the 309 but I could be wrong. This wasn't so long ago but I remember the first Daewoo ads "Dae-what?". They explained that they built everything from toasters to satellites! They neglected to mention that the cars were re-hashed Vauxhalls though!

I remember the Fiat advert Benz Boy referred to - it was for the Strada. There was the immortal spoof on Not The Nine O'Clock News, which had the ad but with a car crashing tagged onto it and the caption: ' Designed by computer, built by robots, driven by Italians'.
Anyone remember the falling VW Golf with Burt Kwouk - 'Volkswagen number one selling imported car in Japan'. They probably sold about three a year - import tarriffs in Japan were horrendous back then.

...and for those of us in the 40+ age group, there was the dreadful BL advert using the 6-5 Special music, but using the words "S-plate Special"! There was a host of cars on a transporter, which was a crib of the telly ad they used when the Austin/Morris 18-22 Series was launched.
And going retro, what about '70s Top Gear presenter William Woollard doing ads for a new C*tr**n C2?

Unfortunately, I can remember 'S plate special' - very cringe-worthy!
Another one was 'Drive a beautiful bargain from British Leyland Superdeal' - my old man did and we tooled around in a lime green Marina for two years!
Then there was the 1978 Scottish world cup squad advertising Chrysler Avengers - 'they both run rings around the opposition'. Apparently some Chrysler execs were reduced to tears after the team's performance!
....and there was dear old Petula Clark with a dodgy blonde perm crooning to us to 'put a Chrysler Sunbeam in your life'.
Gonna shut up now - how sad am I that I remember these?!!

Hah hah yeah!
Or the Montego one, with the suited business guy who can't find a parking space, and ends up on two wheels before doing a perfect 180 degree spin into a non-existant spot 8-)Russ Swift, i do believe!

The ads were better when they could show cars going fast - the hand-wringing do gooders have put a stop to that One modern ad I like is that Honda one with all the car parts setting off in sequence (like dominoes...) - great ad! And no computers involved!

I love that one!! That old car is a Hindustan Ambassador, based on the Morris Oxford. They still make them over there, now with Isuzu diesel engines. Great ad.
