Sorry, couldn't resist posting this - bought me right back to watching it with my dad when I was about 5/6! video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=9049322265602734081First, a review of the world's dullest car (by a young JC), some classic single-seaters being thrashed, an article on classic fakes such as replica Coopers, ripoff Cortinas and finally a section on Hot Rods & custom cars...with a beetle drag racer! Proper good telly ;D There's lots more on there, too.....I love the old intro, much more fun ;D Love the body roll on the 'rod at the end ;D Good for anyone who's never seen some of the earlier ones, for comparision - and there's plenty more on there - just search for "Top gear episode" ;D

Thank you Lewis, I just spent a very happy half hour watching that. I can't remember watching it back in the day, but it felt like it all happened yesterday, Keith Atkinson and the Rutherfords rods, Gladys... Ooh, sent a shiver down my spine. The graphics remind me of the motorshow brochures I've got from that time.
The thing that really blew me away was that my Dad raced at that VSCC meeting, in fact he did every one at Silverstone throughout the 80s and early 90s... I've just looked through his memorabilia and there it is. I then looked up at the picture on my office wall and got a good feeling (he passed away 8yrs ago).
Nice one, that was ace... ;D

Found a load of old Top Gears on VHS during a clearout.... mostly too fuzzy to watch properly but one of them had the road test of the MG Maestro vs Astra GTE when they were new so, what, about 1988? With William Woolard edit: just watched the end with the beetle drag racer - never thought i'd see Keith Seume looking that young

I just watched it too! I vividly remembered the "how to tell if you Lotus Cortina's a fake" bit and the rod feature certainly rung a bell too - was around the time I was just getting into that. I noticed in the credits that the producer was Jon Bentley...gadget show now or something?
What do you reckon Clarkson would make of a Hyundai Lantra these days ;D Faint praise?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Brilliant! Would Clarkson be quite so charitable today when faced with the prospect of reviewing a Hyundai? Seeing William Woolard reminds me of a stupid story from the Classic Car Show at the NEC in about 1989, the BBC were filming there for 'Top Gear' and Woolard was recording a segment on Autojumbles. I'd been in the bar with a few mates and we were having a pleasant semi-inebriated stroll round, when we happened upon the camera crew. As they were filming, I accidentally on purpose lost control of the old Facial Flatulence Valve and let off a belch of almost apocalyptic proportion. A woman stood near Woolard looked across at me and giggled. I thought no more of it, until a few weeks later when the item was broadcast. Plainly audible during Woolard's diatribe was a very loud rattling belch, follwed by the giggling face of a woman stood by him. Fame at last! Brian
