Six port, too. Nice.
These are fantastic cars when they work. They've a lot of the capability of cars like the Porsche 968 and a very unique character.

It's not that unusual, I've seen 53 and 04 cars "running but with issues" for under a grand several times this year, and a 53 plate with 85K on for £2K from a dealer.

Price had to be wrong for an 04? adverts closed anyway It's a annoying feature used on sheff forums, you can lock the advert to replies to avoid the morons chipping in and ruining your advert. Seen a few for simular price, they are getting so cheap now though.

Feh, they are not thirsty for what they do.
They have between 192 and 238bhp, depending on version, and are capable of fantastic performance. My 192 rarely dropped below 24mpg, and on longer runs I could stay legal and get 33-38mpg, or cane it and get around 30. Oil consumption was 500ml every 2,500 miles; I always warmed it up properly and never used it for short/lazy drives.
By comparison my Supra 3.0i non-Turbo was considerably less economical AND slower.
Only thing I disliked was the lack of torque and heavy clutch in traffic. After 20 minutes of M6 car park near Sandbach behind an HGV, I'd have a sore leg and the car would smell of friction material and swearwords.

Oil consumption was 500ml every 2,500 miles; I always warmed it up properly and never used it for short/lazy drives. Urban myth or fact: Mazda dealers gave little paper cones to owners to avoid mess when topping up the oil? I know loads of people who have had these and most of them were the type who get a car when it's new and unusual and then move onto something else really quickly, I always thought that must be common and might account for the low prices. Never heard of anyone having a bad time with them. I love the noise these make when starting up. Sounds more like an aircraft than a car.

The paper cones are a fact! Between the rear seats is a flip-out cubby box, perfectly sized for a litre of oil (stored upright!), gloves and a little bag of cones. Six port cars reputedly used more oil, but genuinely, both the fuel economy and oil consumption were not significantly worse than the 1.6 New Beetle Cabriolet mine replaced when driven on the same roads at the same speeds (hint: Ragging the hell out of a 1.6 car weighing 1400Kg does not result in good fuel economy). Some Beetles/Golfs were known to use 1l/1,000 miles.
I didn't keep mine when the contract hire ended because early models did suffer issues with gearbox/clutch (dual-mass, of course) failures, rust on sills (recall), corroding wheels (recall ), corroding oil pipes (very, very important recall) and I couldn't face the possible bills a few years down. OTOH, main dealer service for an intermediate one was £85 and I watched them oil the door hinges and everything, properly done by the book.

I'm starting to look into these, very interested from spec/price wise it's just the mpg and rumours of coil packs etc going on them that worries me. But yes for say less than £3k you can have a really nice car.

All cars have failing coil packs. Alfas, Renaults. They're just a thing that fails on 8 year old cars - why anyone is surprised is beyond me! Pay attention to the oil cooler pipework. Then look at the sills near where the B-pillar would be. Then check the oil coolers and pipes. Then listen for odd noises from the gearbox/clutch, particularly that awful squeal dual-mass flywheels make when they're about to empty your wallet. Then check the pipework to the oil coolers. I remember some club members having six-speeders go bang with surprisingly low miles, out of warranty repairs amounting to thousands (I think, £3,500ish was typical). Oh, and really, really important. Make sure the recall for the oil cooler pipes has been done, or that they're in good condition. (First thing I did to my RX8 was fit some mesh screens on the oil coolers. The idea of a stray stone puncturing them terrified me. Second thing I did was fit stainless steel strakes. Third thing, I got a bloody great big stone kicked up by a truck that gouged the thin aluminium bonnet and dented the roof! Passengers said "well at least it wasn't the windscreen" - at least a windscreen would have been replaced by the insurance for a couple of quid!)
