Hello all,
Are there any known/common problems with this engine that would make it feel like it has about half the power it should?
This engine has got the single vanos (inlet cam) and the seals on mine do need replacing but i cant see that robbing this much power.
Basically, at 70+mph the engine doesn't want to go any faster, foot flat down and nothing, just hovers in its own little world. Also slow to accelerate.
I've serviced it quite recently, plugs, oil/filter, fuel filter, air filter and i have the software to read fault codes and none displayed. It idles fine so don't think there is an air leak or anything.
I know its only a 'little engine' lugging round an e34 touring body but it cant be this slow??
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Matt

Not getting full throttle?
Mechanical or fly-by-wire?

When the cat went on my Mondeo (an older V6) the car would pull out OK from junctions, but on the motorway or dual carriageway roundabouts you really had to think ahead. It took what seemed like an eternity to move on the motorway (I could hold it between 50-70mph). When on the motorway the gearbox would try and change down a gear, causing me to put the car into Tiptronic mode and hold the 'box in 5th (it would slow down even more if it changed down!). My local garage condemned the gearbox, a gearbox specialist said the cat was at fault (he redlined the car ('box has a 3,500rpm limiter) where we could hear a cat banging away beneath us (oddly enough, the car did have the same knock over certain bumps but we would never have suspected the cat was the cause of that). The car sounded fine (no quieter etc.) With the cat removed the car went like a scalded cat in comparison with much improved MPG. If your car is an auto 4 speed do not rev it beyond 3,000rpm, unless you wish to risk damaging a clutch pack .

Thanks for reply's I read on quite a few beemer forums that an ECU reset it meant to be highly recommended before anything is diagnosed, so, i tried that and it really has made a big difference :\ i was quite skeptical tbh. There is still a bit of lag under 3k rpm which can be firmly pointed at the vanos but apart from that, quite a result Going to monitor is over the next few weeks to see if the performance slips back to how it was then go from there.
