Found these at the side of the road, which is incredibly rare for Ireland. Irish society has no great love of retro cars, classic cars maybe, but most 80s cars were scrapped during the scrappage scheme summers of the mid 90s. We scrapped an 84 Fiesta Mk2 (mint condition apart from the bonnet where someone had poured brake fluid on it ) and got IR£3000 for it, so you can see why so many worthless cars were scrapped (government backed scheme which gave you a ton of cash if you bought a new car)! I had to head to a place called Nobber, Co. Meath (love the name apparently, there is actually an address 69 Muff Cresent in Nobber ) to deliver some equipment to a customer. I've started being very vigilent when I head into the countryside, looking for retro gold (and more importantly, barn find or similar style Minis!) and in 14000 miles of driving, I'd seen little more than a merc on blocks and very little bodywork left! Then, on Wednesday, I spotted these beauties:

Some sort of bizarre abandoned car sales plot? Cool spots, the Irish love a bit of Opel action huh?

There was a garage across the road with an Opel Rekord and something that looked like a Morris Marina as well as loads of other early/mid 90s cars. I woulda taken pics, but the oul fella that ran it was already looking at me suspiciously We only have Opel over here, like germany, so these would have been really really common over here! Very very tempted to save that Orange Kadett, from what i remember it wasnt in terrilbe nick! I'm going back that way in a couple of weeks so I might have another poke around

Oooh, Manta. I want it. Bit of a mission to get it mind you....
Good work on the snaps.
I should really start doing the same as there's a myriad of old cars about around hedges etc down here. Unfortunately my camera is slower than a really slow thing and as such, it's frustrating to use to try take quick shots of interesting roadside vehicles.

The cars in NZ must be fantastic! Get the snaps up - I dunno about anyone else, but its scrapyard finds and old wrecks that I really find interesting. I think I'll stop for a chat with the owner of the opel's next time, see if he'll let me remove them free of charge P.s - Invercargill - goodbye pork pie!!

That's an Austin-Morris J4, forerunner to the Sherpa- if you look at the panels from the nose back they are all the same, when they designed the Sherpa in the early 1970's they simply grafted the nose onto the existing J2/J4 panelwork, moved the front axle forward, and shifted the engine and box forward to give it decent cross-cab access and the option of three front seats. Even today's LDV Convoy bears a striking similarity from the A-pillars back. Cool van though, would make a smashing Gasser Brian Brian

I've heard about those Opels on other forums, owner won't sell any. A load of good solid cars were scrapped here in the early 90s thru a governemnet sponsored scrappage scheme, they allowed you ir£1000 against a new car and most of the dealers allowed another 1000 to 2000. I worked in a Ford dealer at the time, Loads of MK1 and 2 Fiestas, MK2 Escorts, Minis were scrapped , We even had a very good 1 owner Triumph 2000 traded in against a Mondeo, a Fiat 500 drove in and was crushed, absolutley criminal.

Would be pretty easy to do as well...underneath it's all stock BMC componentry, there's a 1622cc B-series engine under the engine cover, would be easy to drop an MGB engine in it with overdrive box....or with a bit of work an 820 Turbo and LT77 box...or..... Thats why I love this forum....it's filled my head with fantasy car builds again! Brian
