Well folks, I've been weding, cutting, hammering and swearing at the camaro's exhaust today.
So what exactly is the legality issue for an MOT passing exhaust.
I've got headers, made some decent-ish downpipes to flexi pipe Y then bigger bore Flexi back and I'm just gonna stick any old small car back box on for silencing. Its all mounted on those rubber bobbins so is secure yet vibe proof (if that makes sense)
Will this be legal?

Cor, dunno mate. Not sure there is a noise requirement but security and leaks are what they are usually looking for. There's a big Trans Am at my local MOT station at the moment. Nice!

They have to go by the din of a standard car of the same age and on a standard exhaust. They can't fail you really unless it's really taking the curse word as they have no way of testing, however if it stupidly loud when the police check it you will get a producer form and a rectifier form. So engineer an easily screw-innable silencing device into the exhaust  Also I can vaguely remember the police could have you on some sort of disturbance of the peace. Best thing is find a traffic copper to talk to - I did and they are nice enough people and approachable enough. |

Not sure on cars,but on bikes the law used to be that the silencer had to be B.S. stamped. But because of the amount of exhausts from outside the E.U.being sold in this country,its now down to the discretion of the M.O.T. tester. There is a decibel law,but it is near impossible to enforce. To stand up in court,the offending vehicle would have to be tested in a sound proof chamber,as any outside noise would interfere with the reading,rendering the evidence as inadmissible. This info was given to me by the bloke that mot's my bikes and being in the game for 30+ years,I took his word for it. And after being pulled on numerous occasions and sprouting the above to various bemused plod,I haven't been ticketed yet! (here we go, tempting fate :  As dollywobbler says,as long as it has no leaks/isn't dangerous,you should be fine.I mean listen to the sound a TVR makes !!!! |

failure options on the mot machine are; excessive noise ex deteriorated ex blowing insecure tbh honest i think theres a few more which are very similar to the above 4.  |
