Mr2 handbrakes are notoriously curse word, so i'm thinking kill 3 birds with one stone! Seeming a little advanced for me, I'm thinking about junking the handbrake and cables, and fitted a linelock instead, I have given up using mine except when I visit Yorkshire!!! Someone somewhere mentioned summat like this. Is it that hard to do? and is it a MOT pass if the old system is fully removed? Thankyouplease PS is no handbrake a dangerous idea, like if foot brake fails?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I stand to be corrected on this BTW - this is just what I thought was the case : You can't pass a valid MOT test (note emphasis on the word 'valid', your friendly MOT tester may differ) without a cable handbrake system - primarily for the reason if the hydraulics go, so does your last backup braking system with it. Keep the handbrake, make sure it works well (it can't be that hard to get it set up well? Even the Dolly ones work nicely) and fit the linelock too

MOT failiure I'm afraid.......we have a hydraulic on the Sunbeam, has to have cables linked to it for MOT/Scrutineering then disconnected the rest of the time.
But for a road car it must have secondary means of operating hand/parking brake, which means you're stuck with cables.
No harm in shoving a line-loc on it though for monster burnouts.....

Thanks for advice. new cable and wad of grease coming up then. it does work, I just don't want worn pads again. curse word design. Line lock for future mods too then... how hard? not too hard i'd imagine specially if worked into a good service.

You can have a hydraulic handbrake as long as its a totally seperate system. And by totally seperate I mean another set of brake calipers, so you would have one for the footbrake and one for the handbrake. Its a bit of an on and was only really popular on rally cars before combined calipers became popular. I wouldnt recommend a linelock as a handbrake in any case. Fine if you want to hold a car on a hill but not if you wanting it to lock up the back end. You have to press the foot brake before pulling the lever this then keeps the pressure to the rear brakes until the lever is released. MR2 calipers are normally repairable when they start to lose efficency just need to rebuild them and set them up well. And once set up they work really well.

Thanks pheonixC, just a wild idea!, the calipers got a semi rebuild (a clubbing, quick clean, and fresh grease +pads), I will look at cable next, also the one on the clutch, this could be cause of slippage, having a car sat with hand brake on for best part of a year wont of helped. not overly shiney but tonnes better than it was.
