I was behind a Mk 1 Cavalier today driven by some silvertop who's probably had it since new (bless 'I'm!). Along with the usual Blackpool-Illuminations-style reflectors all over the back end, it had those rubber "earthing strips" that hang down from the underside of the car and drag on the ground - they used to be EVERYWHERE when I was a kid, and it got me thinking... do you reckon it's cool to have them on a retro car? Or still a bit sad? Personally I think a Mk3 'tina or Vauxhall Viva would look good with a couple of 'em hangin' down! Can you still buy them I wonder?! I especially like the ones with the reflective "lightning bolt" motif on them!

Hmmm. I'm thinking seriously uncool on most cars. This would only look good on something designed to be retro kitch: Viva's with fluffy dice, furry seat covers etc spring to mind. Anything else would be just plain sad. Also, after watching the Top Gear re-run last night where they tried to fry Hammond with 80,000 volts, I was wondering what they actually DO? Aren't they supposed to stop brats getting car sick (Maybe I should get some after all!) and also prevent those little shocks you get when closing the door with the frame rather than the handle?
Love the comment about "reflectors"! There's a coffin dodger down the road from me who has slapped about ten of various shapes and sizes all over the back of his nice new Octavia Estate. Just plain wrong!!!

I'm not sure if marina owners can comment on 'cool or not' arguments..? but... i do have an earthing strip & yes you can still buy them... i havent plucked up the courage to fit it yet tho... i have recently fitted mudflaps which is along the same vein i guess... weren't they meant to help travel sickness too....

I bought my dad one as a birthday present in about 1980. It had a reflector and a vauxhall badge. I thought it would look great trailing on the back of our VX estate but he didn't agree so it stayed in the box. For the next two years I continued to spend most journey's covered in my sister vomit, thank god for vinyl seats, just a shame my socks weren;t made of the same. Get one and fit it, definately Retro kitch (quiche?)

Quiche, definetly retro.
Kitsch...( I'll edit myself, thank you ;D)

I agree - there's definitely a time and a place for kitsch, and if it's done right then it'd look great (I'm thinking Oldskool's purple Viva here ).

In the UK, CB and Mobile Ham radios are legal to use, but handheld mobiles have been banned.
I wonder if that has something to do with them becoming popular over here again. Don't know about Canada though.

Don't know about Canada though. Do you mean mobile phones? If so I'd see a connection too. We only have one (smaller) province thats banned them while driving. Can't see that being enough. Been considering digging out my old TRC though. Had a whip around too. Might have gotten lost in the move.

I'll have a word with my mate Grunter - He's got one on his Mini! (Which can incidentally be seen in a couple of shots from RCS - Red with a No.5 on the door).
