Horses are the gallopy things for going fastly, torques are the things to help with pulling trailers or going up things. The more of both, or either, the better. Some people measure these in kW and Nm or HP and ft lb but really it is just the bigger then number the better. There is probably more to it than that. Head is going on now (boss is away), it has been done for me by a guy who used to build BTCC engines and he has a solid reputation for doing good things with engines. It is a long legged 300tdi so I'm not expecting tyre shredding performance but any improvement is appreciated. Implandy I will drop you a line at some stage or come and have a look if you are local (or going to The Gathering)

Love this thread! Didn't realise D2 chassis rotted so badly, though. I'd always planned on getting a rotten late td5 and dropping my Range Rover body on it, gaining me lots of nice shiny new things but still looking old and cool. But it seems the best combo would be original RR chassis with a D2 body modified in all the appropriate places to make it a classic Rangie?

I already have a D1 naked chassis with a particularly long and horrible story attached. I hope it's not one that was burnt out near dronfield/totley about 10-12 years ago, we saw that - luckily we didnt see what was inside it

There is probably more to it than that. Yeah, one is a product of the other, a fairly important detail.

joem83 Definitely not a burnt out one, just an exercise in .. no, wait, I'm not saying until I do a build thread. misteralz We have a couple of plans underway including having the mechanical benefit of a D1, the structural benefit and interior comfort of a D2 and the exterior style of a RR Classic. It is a big job.

Looking forward to that build thread! I'd need to keep the classic stalks, mind. Disco (and Freelander 1 ones) made me want to break them off in frustration.

Hi there , any progress on the RRC recreation?
I've now got myself a TD5 D2 Bodyshell, cost less than the repair panels for my D1 body and far better spec, unfortunately its an auto so will need to change pedal box before going near putting it onto the D1 chassis.
Tried to work out the wiring differences, but reckon I need to take you up on your previous offer.

Great thread! I'm a bit the other way around in that I'm wanting to put an D1 3dr commercial shell on a TD5 chassis. Also in the mechanical design stages of a TD5 swap into an LDV 200 truck, or ideal a 200 panel van (sourcing a base vehicle is the hindrance on the point).

I wanted to 3 door mine but to be honest the 5 door is more practical and the D2 shell I think is just a bit long to make it look right.
Of course, with a bit of farting you could mount all the 3 door D1 panels on a D2 carcass. Thought of that too, and doing it all with RRC panels.
If only there was more time and money.

That's something I never thought of, although IIRC the D2 shell rear-wheels backwards is about 3" longer is it not? I was thinking at one point of letting in the D2 body line into the 3dr 1/4s so it'd look like a pukka 3dr D2, but lately I've been fonder of the D1 in base trim!

Yep, the shell is a few inches longer (about 6) but a cut and shut D2 shell would still be less rusty than a D1. Similarly, you'd need to fit an entire rear end from a RRC due to the tailgate. The rear doors would also create work as the door shut, arch and striker are all quite different.
It's a lot of work.
Putting a D2 body on a D1 is not.

The roof bars on your silver Disco 2, we had the thicker bars on our (sadly departed) D2 which was a very late model. What's the background on them, you don't see many with the thick bars.

Some of the special editions and the very late cars had the chunky sport bars, not very common, they look great but the crossbars are a billion pounds and they're not really practical. I fitted theses ones a few years ago.

I believe they were available on the late Landmark models. They seem to fetch ridiculous money, not sure why?
