Well, since this is now nearing the end of its conversion into the ultimate useful machine, thought I'd pop it on here in a little home of its own. Bought about 2 1/2 years ago as MonzaNikki always wanted a Discovery (got rid of her '06 Astra) and this was a cheap, local car from a reliable source, 300TDi, manual, 3 door, 5 seat We ran it standard for a while to make sure it was going to be ok in the long run and it has taken us to Cornwall, London, Suffolk, Devon and many points between (I know this shouldn't even warrant a mention but it is an old Land Rover!), sometimes even completing journeys under its own power! (actually, it's been really good and only misbehaved once) Spent some time sourcing nice wheels and tyres etc then gradually dressing it up a bit. We use it off road and for dragging the horse trailer about, pulling tree stumps, towing things and stuff. After a couple of years of wear and tear I've gone through much of the mechanical side improving and uprating sensibly where necessary. These are capable off road and towing vehicles anyway. It's been hit in the rear twice so I've changed the towing gear each time, now with an adjustable height set up as it's been lifted 2 inches and has 31 inch tyres. Scored a cheap roofrack and a bargain Safari Snorkel, extended the breathers so the wading depth is now 6 feet, if you can see over it, you can drive through it (although you'll get wet) Got this on earlier in the year after some messing around: (I'm not a big fan of private plates but this came on a Defender that it would have been rude not to buy!) Finally got some awesome wheels, been after some slots for ever but these turned up fairly near and at the right price With a strip and some elbow grease..... and to date, here we are: Next step, complete tear down, weld up the body and sort the headlining. No paint to do or anything, just needs a wash. Hope this is an acceptable form of transport.

looks good, check under the battery tray and check at the base of the b pillars under the carpet, my best mate had one that rotted out there pretty badly, rear floor is easy to sort if its rusty, just cut out and weld in a big flat sheet!
have you checked the articulation and catching the tyres on the front arches i know we did quite a bit of trimming to get them in ??

Just a little fettling around the rear body and front inner wings to do, boot floor was done just before we got it and I did the sills before the last MOT. Battery tray is nearly non existent but will be fitting twin batteries after the overhaul. Articulation and tyre scrub isn't an issue as such. I wanted to get the big tyres etc without any body mods, I see loads of cut about and (for christs sake) bobtailed rubbish on a weekly basis and needed to have a car that was both capable and that I didn't mind being seen in. Got a TD5 too but it would cost so much to fit it out like this one, will have to sell it on. I'll now admit the 5 door is more practical but 3 doors will always win on looks. I have a commercial one too which is fitted up similarly but waiting for the right set of wheels and tyres. Cheers

that looks nice!
Can I ask how you find it to drive? hows motorway speeds etc?
After VBOA this year the missus is liking the caravan experiance over the tent one, and shes got the bit in her teeth about getting a 'van and tarting it up, getting it vinyl wrapped etc for giggles so Ive been looking at disco's for a tow car. But it would have to pass as an everyday car too.
whats the mpg like?

Before I faffed about with my 200tdi disco it would do 36mpg on a motorway trip.
Ive messed that up with a snorkel, big tyres, a body lift and a winch bumper. Tweaking the boost and pump hit the mpg hard too :-(
They drive really well though. Comfy and smooth and fairly quiet on road tyres.
I'd say go for it!

It's great as a tow car, I'm geting about 28mpg regularly with all that silly stuff on it. The tyres are noisy but I like it so I don't care. With normal suspension and road tyres, they are like a tall estate car, expect 25-30mpg really but I drive it carefully not like a loony, remember it is a small lorry not a big car. They can be civilised and quiet, the steering is light even with the big tyres, good visibility, will tow big stuff and you'll barely notice anything on the back. I'd personally go for a late 300 auto (up to S/T reg) unless you really want a manual one, buy on condition, mileage really doesn't matter unless it has 500k or something but by then it should have been pretty much entirely replaced! Tony, your opinion of my wheels doesn't count..... SJ4x4, yes, awesome tyres thanks and no breakdowns when I collected the wheels! (although just had one on the way to Longleat in the other halfs familys TD5)

(although just had one on the way to Longleat in the other halfs familys TD5) Pesky TD5's spent a fortune on the wife's in recent months, do you still have the wheels ? I may be interested in buying them back if they are superfluous. Needed for my current project retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=118205&page=1 we are down your way next week

Hey look. We still have this and today, in pre celebration of forthcoming events and because it's good Sunday or whatever, we went to Salisbury Plain. Still running the same set of KL71 copies, still the BP+2 suspension kit only really new thing is the huge intercooler liberated from a scrap discovery I bought. Modified the rear step a bit.... Did the guys with the real Land Rovers make you leave that extra gap when you parked next to them? Straight-six filled update coming soon, btw - hope there's room in the car park?
