Corvairs were one of the first (if not THE first?) production cars you could buy with a turbo.

The Corvair Monza Spider Turbo went on sale about a week after the Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo, apparently.
What a lot of people forget is that the first draft of "Unsafe at Speed" was about the VW Beetle, but Nader decided to go after GM as they were a bigger target...
GM's witnesses included Sir Stirling Moss who reckoned the car's handling was fine.
The face lifted cars are revised geometry.
There have been 4 Corvairs (three of which were convertibles) on eBay in the UK in the last few months alone.
I *will* own one, one day. I would like a late model one, about a '68 or so, in 2 door hard top.

do you know what. I knew about these corvairs but never actually paid any attention to them. looking at this thread though I think that might have changed slightly. there's something intriguing (to me anyway) about the shape of them

The later one is a really nice shape. The early one is a bit like an upturned bathtub.

gen1 - don't like the front end but like the roof line and the shorter rear gen 2 - like the front end and lack of b pillar but not liking the generous rear overhang

GM's witnesses included Sir Stirling Moss who reckoned the car's handling was fine. The thing with rear suspension like that used on the early Corvairs is that if you overstep the limit it will bite, big time. If you're a skilled racing driver, you'll know what to do to keep it under control - and you'll be able to sense where the limit is. It's the same with a early 911: in skilled hands they are very capable machines, but in unskilled hands they tend to end up in the hedge quite quickly. Not saying that Ralph Nader was right, just pointing out that some cars do have odd handling characteristics that most people can't cope with. first gen with swing arm rear The Imp design team had a bad crash while cornering at 30mph in an early Corvair they were evaluating. As a result the Imp's suspension was designed with semi-trailing rear arms instead of swing arms, taming the tail-happy rear engine setup somewhat before dialling in some understeer by compromising the front suspension a bit.

I never understood why the 1st Corvair styling was so influential & widely copied NSU, Simca & others. But love the 2nd, even the sedans look great.. if big. Just as well the 2nd gen had significantly revised rear suspension. Though it was often commented that early examples exciting handling would have been tamed with a front anti-sway bar.

i must be a bit wierd, cso i cant stand the second generation. vw type 4 front end and the rest is just generic boring muscle-car coke bottle hips shape. yawn.
i love the 1st gens though, like a crazy mix of razor edge ghia and hiillan minx (yeah i know the corvair came first!)with an impala roof. id have one any day over a later one. the lowrider one driven by the dude with the 'fro above is AWESOME.

I suppose many elements of the 2nd gen style was also evident in a number of other cars at the time too, developed concurrently. Alfa Giulia coupe, Mazda 1500/1800/Luce & many GM cars that followed. Making it less controversial & unusual.

Took these at Old Town on Saturday night. I have always liked the Corvair and there are some hot examples out there.
