Right, enough of hogging the MAIN BOARD, time for a build thread. First, a teaser... ...then, some back story. As many of you know, I bloody love the Gathering. It is my holiday, my two weeks in Spain, the weekend of my year. I'm sure a lot of you feel the same. Last year was fantastic apart from one factor. This... No, not that large finger over the lens -the hideous Mercedes (no offence Benzboy, I'm sure you're having fun with it). It was a waste of money, it broke down and, all in all, it was a bit of a joke. So, as I gazed upon it at RRG'11 I vowed to have something 'cool' for RRG'12. Then I lost my job, somewhat shooting any such dream in the face. HOWEVER! I recently got a job, so with RRG'12 fast approaching I hit the internet hard and found a car. Something to be a little slice of me at the Gathering. Something that was a bit cool, but still plenty shonky enough to classed as a Pollitt purchase. Enter stage left £900 worth of flaccid American 'muscle'. My 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Seats? Sort of. Interior? No. Comfort? No. Any degree of reliability? Hell no. A 350 Olds 'Rocket' small block V8? Yup. Staggered Slot Mags? Oh yes. A dashboard with a push-button start and electrics that go "BZZZZFIZZZZBZZZZCLUNK". Indeedy. It's a heap, but it's my heap, and it's been bought for no other reason that to take to the Gathering. I just hope it makes it there. I won't bore you with all the details as they can be obtained via the thread in the main board. Instead I shall update this thread - true to the board it's posted in - with its 'build'. I hope you all enjoy, and most crucially of all, I hope it makes it to the Gathering. **mad props to Mystery Machine and Butterz for the pictures** Chris

how in the name of steam powered curse word did you manage to find a slice of working yankee V8 for less than a grand? I am forever on the lookout for something cheap and american to scratch the V8 itch, and you've managed to land something that not only fits the bill, but is actually damn cool in its own right. To say I am jealous is an understatement If you ever want to sell it, sell it me! Please!!! Looks mean as fook!

I'm glad you like it and while I'd be happy to sell it to you, I'm afraid there is a worryingly long line of people ahead of you. Chris

I'm sure you know my feelings towards this thing, IE: it bloody awesome.
I like the fact we've both manned-up and purchased V8's for the Gathering, I'm just hoping mine goes through an MOT so we can have a comedy cops and robbers chase round the mean streets of Gotherington.

Nice. I'd like to see this with black tints and wearing flames in a slightly lighter shade or, er, black.

Right, a plan has been hatched. Of sorts. It'll be going to spend the day at Area:52 at the end of the month for some scrutiny, some prep and some small repairs, all thanks to the endless generosity of Bruce. Things on the list include... *Secure the now very loose driver's seat. *Get the indicators working again - I kinda' need those. *Sort the shocking brakes out - it's nice to be able to stop *Re-do the front grille to make more of a feature out of it. Before then I plan to strip the bumpers back - there's chrome under that, dontcha' know - as I like the idea of bringing a little 'detail' to the car. I know a lot of you won't like chrome bumpers on it, but hey. If it looks rubbish I'll paint them black again. I also plan to give the slots some love. Nothing major at this stage, just running repairs. All I want it to do is get to the Gathering. Until then, have a picture of a 'normal' '73 Cutlass Supreme... Chris

I love the fact you can never guess what kind of car your going to buy next, this is a completely random and awesome purchase. I'm unlikely to see it before hand, so I can't wait to see this at the Gathering. I trust this will be roaring up the hill?

If I can get all the niggles sorted in time, resulting in a more 'solid' drive, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be firing her up the hill.

So, I decided that while I do like the overall 'mean' look of the car, there's just too much black going on. I reckon a bit of detail in the form of some shiny bits wouldn't hurt, so with that in mind, I popped down to Halfords and grabbed some... ...and then I went to work on the rear bumper. As anticipated, the curse word paint didn't put up much of a fight... ...and 40 minutes later I set to work with the scraper to see what was hiding beneath. "And behold, thy Pollitt applied thy Nitro Mors andeth waitedeth for thy paint to surrendereth. He tooketh a blade to yon paint and behold, it was good...sorteth of."Okay, it wasn't good per se, but it is kind of shiny. I like that. I've only done about a third of the bumper (rain has stopped play) and I'm happy with what I have. Just got to do the rest now, including the front bumper. Oh, and in other news I found a very small picture of it in its past life... ...the stripes will not be making a comeback. Chris

Will look loads better with less black. In other news, some prankster has appeared to have glued 2 drinking straws under the rear bumper.
