I've got one of the proper tools. I bought it to fit windows into my van from - www.leisurevehiclewindows.co.uk/although will be avaliable form other sources. Possible to fit the strip without the tool but it makes it so easy I wouldn't consider trying. The design is basically a wire diamond on a handle. Wouldn't be difficult to make something yourself out of piano wire or similar "springy" material and fit into a piece of broom handle. The dia of the wire is about the same as a coat hanger but you need far better quality steel as the sort of metal coathangers are made from would simply bend too easilly whilst you were inserting the chrome strip. You also need LOTS of lubricant. IMO liquid soap is better than washing up liquid Paul H

As above, I would get the tool, considering the price of chrome strips these days.

We used to get one of the windscreen companies to fit new screens when MG's were fetching a fortune in the 80's, I remember one guy spending at least 1/2 a day trying to get the chrome back in before giving up and getting someone else out to do it......

i got an expert in for the screen on my mk1 escort, took him 1/2 hour and only £20, i think you will need to go to an oldskool type of fitter though as the mewbies only deal with the modern screens

I read online that there is a tool for doing it but cannot find any other decent advice? anyone got any ideas? or the ability to do this? think this could be the second thing iv ever paid for doing on a car...... wide or thin chrome strip? those tools only fit the rubber locking strip not the wide chrome trim, there is no tool for that just plenty of lube a small metal putty knife and time, lots and lots of time, took me and me mate 2 days to do the front of a wide strip MG earlyer this year, mainly due to needing a break from the monotony and it taking foofing hours to do the lower one and the top, sides aint too bad except if you but new from moss, they are curse word and the wronge shape, we sent 3 back before we gave up and bent the dam cheap chinease copys to fit Something like the normal thin trim like on an escort i can do in ten mins easy using those insertion tools, the wide MG one a day, a full day at that and i would need a day off after

at the risk of being shot down in flames ,have you tried fiting the rubber to the glass then fit the chrome strips.then place the glass on the aperture and fit using the cord method with lots of lube ,let us know if this works

The strip locks the rubber in place when fitted to the vehicle. If it's inserted before attempting to fit the screen then there won't be enough "give" in the part of the rubber that need to flex under the pull of the cord. The result, therefore, is the cord simply cuts the rubber. Found this out from personal experience many years ago when fitting Minor van rear door windows into the sides of my Reliant Regal Supervan III Paul H
