Help me out here folks. I remember, from my kiddie years, a bit Japanese estate, probably a Toyota, which had twin rear wipers and quite possibly, fake wood down the sides. Does anyone know what this is? Have any pics?!
Haven't seen one for many, many years. I'm sure my infant mind didn't make it up. They must really exist!

Might it be a Datsun? Although the MS80 (?) CROWN also had double rear wipers My dads friend had a mazda 929 (mikeV8/Mr Bo11ox shape) wagon, which had fake wood on the sides, but I can't recall if it had twin wipers....I was 3 at the time, so I guess such issues weren't bothering me!

That's not what I have in my head but it certainly has all the features! Any others guys?
This forum is rather worryingly making me realise that I need a J-car!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

My daily driver Camry estate has twin rear wipers, a constant source of amusement to me (and very frequently used on currently filthy roads). Sadly it has no wood panelling.
The earlier 330 model Cedric estate had them too, can’t remember if the old CROWN did too (probably). Wood effect was usually limited to the tailgate, not full-on down the sides like American wagons.
Think all CROWNs and Cedrics from that era would have had the fold-down 3rd row of seats, so that doesn’t really help.

and older yank wagons which do usually have the woodgrain down the sides usually don't have wipers on the back. They use a crazy scheme by which the rear window winds down into the tailgate, gets squirted with water and then winds back up again... The rubber seal acts as the "wiper". madness.

Well, you could always nail a bit of pine to the flanks of your modern Camry! It was this model Camry that reminded me of the older car, whatever it was. Sorry if I sound wiper obsessed but they've always interested me when I grew up in the 80s. I could get very excited by the clever pantograph rear wiper on a mk1 Astra or Chevette estate/van! Some people say I was a strange child...

I don't like rear wipers for some reason...... I do. With the Camry's tailgate being near vertical it sucks all the filth onto it. Camry's shape is a bit too blobulous to look right with pretend wood I fear. Who knows, it was a big seller in the US so maybe they did do it as an option there AlistairK, that US 'wiper' arrangement sounds mad! I can really see me doing that numerous times on my journey to work..... By coincidence I've just read an '89 comparo on RWD estates in the US, had all the GM/Ford versions (all prettty much identical, and with that tailgate system you describe) plus 740, M-B W124 and 505 - looked an odd line-up.

The rubber seal acts as the "wiper". madness. so it wipes on the way back up... filling for rear door with wibblepoo? proper mad idea, hugely over complicated to way to just clean the rear window. may as well stick an autoclave in the rear door too and kill all the bacteria on it at the same time...

reckon it will be the ms85 series CROWN estates 75-80 ish P-V reg. struggling to think of a woody one tho. strugglin to think if we had Cressida estates too?? mind gone blank.
I had a CROWN 'van', one of seven sold in 1977 i think, basically an ms85 estate with 4 speed manual boxes not auto. only manual factory CROWNs you could ever get in uk.

Got any pics Tony? I may have picked up the "wood" thing elsewhere - perhaps spending too much time looking at those crazy Yank Tanks!

I had a bit of a root around in my boxes and PC folders and found..... This is the CROWN TC is referring to, same as the one Datsuncherry posted above. Had a look at the earlier MS55-type model (correct code?!) but they don't seem to have rear wipers at all. This is the bizarre-looking rear of my Camry, uncharacteristically clean here. This is a 330 model 280C, Cedric in other words. It has wood, it has twin wipers, could we be close? This was replaced by the 430 model (in green) posted above. Y30 Cedrics are great, but they went sensible and only got one rear wiper.

But, are they worth buying? Well, I guess the tricky bit is finding one!

Aha! Well, here's one or two other pic's then..... Yes they're worth buying, but rare. And sought-after - see comments elsewhere here about the saloon in need of work that's just sold for £2000. Much-loved by banger racers. Oh, and it seems that the 260C version of the 330 model didn't have rear wipers, so don't get caught-out there! Datman has a 230 model 260C estate for sale, it was at CaRS. But that doesn't have the wipers you're after. I kick myself for not chasing up a one-owner 280C estate some years ago that was local, didn't sell at £600 but at £300 it quickly disappeared (to the track?).

I think the yank estates wipe the crud off on the way down and then clean them with water on the way back up. Or something. Might explain why you see so many yank station wagons with the rear tailgate rotten out...
There used to be a Toyota 2600 estate like that in a garden near me. Gone now. Irritatingly I was going to save it, but I decided it was too modern and not a saloon. If it was the earlier CROWN in an estate I'd have done it if it was that CROWN in a saloon I'd have done it. Now I'd take the damn thing and be well chuffed. Wonder what happened to it? Scrapped or bangered I suspect.

I love estates. I wrote an article for Classic Car Weekly a few months ago on classic estates voting the Triumph 2000/2500 my overall favourite. Gorgeous motors!
