Hi folks I rolled the Mk1 Cortina out of the garage yesterday following about 18 months of welding. Fitted back up the carb and exhaust, filled the carb float chambers with fuel, and it fired first time! When I came to move it, clutch is stuck. Any tried and tested tips for freeing off a stuck clutch without splitting the engine and gearbox. Thanks folks. Cortinaman

Hold clutch down, start car in gear, drive round the block in first gear kangaroo stylee with the clutch pedal still held down, should free off eventually.

Jack up the axle on one side and start the engine , foot on clutch slip into second gear and hold the revs at 2000rpm then start pushing the brake pedal and handbrake until the plate lets go . Worst can happen is it stalls the engine but ive done it plenty of times including big diesel stuff where I've superglued the plate to the cover when there isn't much room to draw the box backwards .

Get it hot first then try popups method, then froggys if the first don't work, if it's still stuck your onto more "fun" ways like having it running and in gear then dropping off a jack ect

Thanks for all the advice folks. I tried Froggy's method first as my road isn't really ideal for test driving without an MOT or Tax! And it worked a treat - a couple of dabs on the brake pedal with my foot on the clutch and pushing the throttle with a piece of wood, and it freed off. MOT tomorrow, wish me luck!!! cheers Cortinaman

Afternoon. Just wanted to resurrect this thread, as I had it book marked, just in case.I now have a need for it, in the shape of my latest Sierra.Been sat in a field for the last 2.5 years, and someones yard before that.Last run 2008. Anyway, Ive managed to get it running, but, the clutch is stuck.Wont ingage gears whilst running, start it in gear with the clutch in, and it kangeroo starts. Ive tried the driving method, then the jack up method(although I had both drive wheels off the ground, does this matter?). Neither worked, so then jacked it up so the wheels where an inch or so from the ground, gave it the beans in second, and my helper dropped the jack down. This only resulted in a satisfying wheelspin, but, still stuck. Is there anything else to be done before I have to take the gearbox out?Was hoping not to have to do that you see. Any help appreciated. Thread on it is here if of any interest. retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=140529&page=1#1692383

Hi, as already suggested by Popuptoaster Get it hot and start in gear, drive off and get it up into top gear if you can as this puts most load on the clutch because clutch always slips in top first.

When I picked mine up the clutch was well seized and nothing shifted it. In the end I just ran it for a couple of hours until the engine heat got well into the clutch - then it just freed itself off.
Just run the engine with the clutch pedal held down - may take time, but it usually works without any dramatics.

have you considered checking to see the clutch still actually works? ie, is the clutch giving enough movement at the clutch, to disengage it?

I just kangarooed my Impreza about for 2 miles until it freed itself off ok,changing gear about 2500 rpm. I was actually on my way to get the clutch done and couldn't get access to a trailer when low and behold it started working!!! Well happy. Fault never came back.
