OK, so my BMW is supposed to be 'sporty'. But the throw on the gear lever is a little bit on the long side. I want it to be a bit more 'snicky', if that makes any sense! Who would like to explain to the class idiot how these quickshift thingys work and how you install one. Thanks, 'Thickie' Pog.

buy a gear lever for a 1.9 z3 knocks an inch off the throw! £39 from bmw. same throw as a $400 UUC one. I can give you a step-by-step fitting guide as well if you want you have to thump them into gear because of the lost force, as the fulcrum point has moved. basically its longer on the bottom side of the pivot ball, meaning the lower part moves further for the same amount the top part moves. and I've gone cross-eyed

grab a pencil near the bottom and hold it vertically. move the top and note how far the bottom moves. Now hold it halfway up and repeat - lot less top movement for the same bottom movement.
most, if not all, quickshift kits just move the pivot point and so shouldn't be very expensive at all. Or you can just shorten the lever (or fit a shorter one, as mentioned above) above the pivot point which will have the same effect by changing the ratio of th edistances above and below the pivot.
i know on mk2 goofs, the quickshift kits are just like this but they do make the shift action rather clunky, so they also sell a weighted shift rod - the rod that does front-to-back movement from the lever to the box has a whapping great lump of metal on it, so it has greater momentum and whaps into gear easier.

Has anybody had experience of the left/right bias spring you can get for Mini gearlevers?

i heard that an X3 3.0 shifter in an e30 is nice and brings the gearlever higher up, so less time spent moving your hands, you know touring car style. I'm still investigating this one.

one of the fiesta mods is to change all the plastic bearings for metal ones and cut an inch off the top of the lever

Mine has a sherpa shift which changes the pivot point a lot, apparently - but there is literally cm of throw between gears, it's remarkable!

I find halving the length between pivot and the top does the trick, Did the same in my escort.
