Okay simple question. Been looking on ebay (oh no!) at Nissan Skylines wich are under 12 year old and lowish millage (R33 etc.). Why are these cars ONLY around the £640 to £3500 (later price high spec, 12 months M.O.T, etc.) price tag? Now I know '3.5k' ain't cheap but I do remember only a few years ago people/motoring programs/magazines and 'kroozers' nearly having 'orgasms' at these cars ;D Sorry but I just am curious ... ...and woundering...

Nissan fans are all saving for 350Zs. The Skyline is a good purchase now because they are kinda out of fashion. Because there was such a fuss over them when new, everything that can be done has been done. Tuners have moved on and focused on newer models. Car prices usually go through a bit of a dip when latest models are too old to get finance on. Get in now before the market shifts and prices start to rise again.

bizarre heard this recently too, i have wondered that in the past too. I'd imagine a lot are trashed , have a test drive and good sniff around, then theres the non turbos etc. don't forget insurance(try a quote)/running/petrol costs.
all my assumptions like, someone will know more...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I'd be looking out for a clean R32, reckon that has more 'classic' potential - such a fantastic shape and the running gear is all essentially the same. Non GT-R R33 coupes look a bit oddly proportioned IMO, though my views on the R33 saloon were enhanced when I had a good look at Ratdat's (and even more so when I drove it, despite it only being a 2-litre).

That is thing. The biggy on all the Nissan Skylines was the GTR. Everyone that wanted one saw one , bought one, got a quote for insurance and then sold one. Then they tried the non turbos (i) and the non AWD (ii) models, then either (i)fell asleep at the wheel or (ii) slithered off the road and sold on cheap.
Now they are cheap for a while.

The GT-R is the expensive Skyline, the other Skylines have never really been THAT expensive on the used market especially in Japan where the non-turbo ones are pretty much free! True they used to cost a lot more than they did though, there was a point where rough as hell R33 GTS models went for more than mint condition R32 GT-Rs! The R32 GTSt seems like a good buy for the money, like this one. RWD, 2 litre turbo, 215hp, sounds OK! Just don't make it into a GT-R replica like everyone else seems to, I think stock they look pretty nice with the little badge in the middle. Maybe change for GT-R wheels or something.

loads of the drivers that got these have been banned now , so they are affordable. A lad local to me got an R33 GT-R for very little for that very reason When he gets banned, I may offer him some beans and then sell it on a Skyline owners forum Do semi modern J machines get "scene taxed"

Ah thanks for info everyone It would appear I have been guilty of thinking all are GTR capability and thus 'taken in'. However even 'GTR versions seem superb value for money (and looking at the performance figures I would say they are more superior than the New Nissan 350) compared to say something like a Escort Cosworth or Subaru Imprezza. The other bargin I've noticed is the Mitsubushi 'FTO' these too I cannot believe how cheap have become ... ...perhaps time has just moved on and I'm getting old ;D

My dad owns this R32 GTR He paid £6500 for it early last year with just 40,000 km ont he clock. When he bought it was running 380 bhp now its pushing 422hp. Skylines are excellent value for money for 1 main reason, that you can chase most ferraris and porsches down the road I a car that costs a fraction of their value. IMO of course!

non gtr and m/v spec ones are sluggish and expensive to run, they atract the higher premiums without the performance to match, simple as!
(all reports i've heard/read/seen have described the non gtr versions this way too)
plus r34s are getting common enough for owners to upgrade to them now, 33's are old hat

don't dismiss the Non GTR `Liners Housemate has a 2.5L single turbo GTSt, rear wheel drive and its bloody stupid fast ;D I`m talking Bike Fast, relentless accelleration ;D He has it set up for "Pulling Shapes" ;D so it has OS Giken 2 way LSD, and full Super Drift Tein coilovers plus a very carefull spec and build to start with Its nicely understated on 18" super-T`s Blew the engine up in a very big way at bedford last month so Phase 2 build is underway now..... looking at a healthy 500hp ;D Bearing in mind thats a good 100-150hp more than its got already it is going to be stupidly fast in its new incarnation ;D They are genuine figures too, not your average "exhaust and more boost on a skyline is 500hp Bo11ox" there is a world of difference between a "Real" 350hp at the wheels and the billy bu11shit "500hp" skylines out there GTSt is also a hell of a lot lighter than the GTR as well ;D HTH Dom

Yes about insurance and maybe running costs, and definitely about the R33/R34 thing. However, the only people who think normal Skylines are slow would be those who only know about GT-Rs and expect every Skyline to be a beast. Ratdat's saloon was pretty much about as low down the pecking order as you can get in an R33, but it still seemed more than adequate to me. The RB-series engine is great, I'd happily chuck a non-turbo 2.0 or 2.5 into my old 240K!

give me a KPGC10 anyday Me too Seriously though.... the 2wd GTS-t and GTS-25t R32 and R33 Skylines respectively are great cars, the turbo RB motors are very tuneable (RB20DET and RB25DET) and take very well to having huge ass hairdryers bunged on them. Great for a bit of sideways action as well!!!
