I'm trying to get my Fiesta on the road, it drove into a garage 8 years ago and hasnt moved since. It just failed an MOT due to the emissions...they were off the charts ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) I need some advice on getting them down. This are all the things that I have changed on it so far: New distrubutor cap and rotor arm New HT leads and spark plugs New fuel pump New air filter Oil change and filter Used Redex to clean the carb One of the first bits I want to know which might help a lot is which way should I turn the fuel mixture screw to get less fuel?? After that I'm a bit stuck so any suggestions? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

It needs a good blast down a motorway or the carb setting up

1) Set valve clearances.
2) Change oil. Oh, you've done that one. Did you use the right grade?
3) Set points gap (having checked condensor and made sure you're getting a nice big blue spark).
4) Set ignition timing.
5) Set idle mixture.
6) Italian tune-up (get it properly hot and thrash the nuts off it for a few miles).
7) re-visit ignition and mixture.
If you don't know how to do these things, pay a garage (preferably a classic car specialist, with a "well established" mechanic) to do it for you. Nothing there is particularly hard, but if you don't know what you are doing you'll only make things worse.

What James said.
Did it fail on hydrocarbons or CO2?

Valve clearances were done but yeah i'll look at the others. its just a pain it aint taxed cause I'm a bit reluctated to take it out on the road for a proper drive. Robin - it failed on both massively! 9.99% on Co2 and i cant remember what he said on the hyrdocarbons but for some reason 3000 comes to mind!

Sounds super rich. Unfortunately I know nothing about the carbs on these! Hopefully someone who does will be along soon.

IME the carb will be full of laquer from the old fuel and to shift it you really need to strip the carb and blow out all the passages with carb cleaner, pluss the usuall susspects are choke not fully off and the crank vent blowing oil fumes into the inlet, you can just re direct this into a catch can if it's the problem and block off the manifold pipe.

9.99%? Ignition WAY too far advanced. Get a timing light on it! I'm guessing that the plugs are black and there's soot/smoke from the exhaust too.

I'm with James although I'm upping his 9.99% to a whopping 99.99% ....based on what I've seen of Mk1 Fiestas and James' knack of getting them running sweetly!

What year of car did emissions become compulsory for on the MOT as I thought it was around 1983 onwards?

What year of car did emissions become compulsory for on the MOT as I thought it was around 1983 onwards? I recall 1st of august 1975.. Before that it has to have a visual smoke emissions test, after '75 its onto the gas analyser!

Is a weber carb, not sure on the actual spec though. Just changed the points which has helped a bit but for some reason the idle won't stay steady. Get it set right and then a min later is out again, either running fast or just dies ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Hi, you say it has been stood for 8 years. Is it possible you have a leaking head gasket? Antifreeze has a habit of separating from the water if a car is stood for a long period of time. Then you get corrosion in the head gasket as well as core plugs, aluminum castings and the cast steel. This would play havoc with emissons. Which engine type/size is it?

Time to get the timing light out. Leave the mixture screw alone untill you know the timing is correct otherwise you may well make things worse.
Out of interest does it have a CAT?

Out of interest does it have a CAT? Cats weren't fitted on UK-spec Fiestas until 1992.
