Chaps
I'm selling a car and a potential buyer wants to know the reference on my last MOT cert to check its mileage?
Is it safe to give out?
Cheers

I usually ask for it, too. Some of the consumer sites suggest it for buyers as a way of seeing that the seller has nothing to hide.
As said above, you can't do anything with the document number. One of the reliable guys at our DVLA LO has confirmed that. It's not specifically for this sort of verification but it's turned out to be handy for it.

As above, I have asked for it too so I can check MoT history on a car (usually on eBay) so I can decide to go and view or not waste mine and the sellers time.
