Hello folks.
I have owned my old '72 bus with devon roof for almost ten years now and it is looking a bit sorry for itself. This christmas I am finaly getting a welder and so have decided to use the old bus to learn on and hopefully make it lurvely at the same time (even if it means redoing whichever part I start on as my ability improves).
Now what I would like from you fine people is a bit of inspiration in the form of pics of completed vans (show vans etc...) and for those that have a bus of there very own, any ideas of things you'd like to do to yours.
I am undecided as to wether I want to keep the roof at the moment or go for a webasto style conversion instead. I have a young daughter and another sprog on the way so I have a feeling that practicality is going to dictate that the elevating roof stays. I have been toying with the idea of fitting earlier style wheel arches (i.e. no lips) to give a smoother look as they need replacing anyway but I'm not sure how well it'll work.
Also, has anyone played with different rear light clusters or changes to the front panel?
What about spare wheel positioning? Mine at present is bolted to the front of the van.
Any interior ideas are also welcome.
Oh, and being a '72 model mines the rarer (more awkward when ordering parts) change over model so has the later rear end but the earlier low indicator front end and early bumpers.
Thanks for any help.
Smiler.
Oh, and yes I will be completing the Cortina and Escort!!!

How about grafting a Splitty front panel on? Rear lights..... Hmmmm, break away and add something different like the long elevated clusters from a Ovlov estate. Rear arches sound like a good idea, also look at the option of adding round arches rather than square both front and rear.....
That should teach you a thing or two.

I have to admit, and no offense, that every single thing you mentioned puts the shivers up me! Round arches on a Bay window!?!

I have been toying with the idea of the rear lenses from a mk1 Cortina. Possibly with a bit of fairing work if necessary to give enough space for them.
Splitty front end sounds good at first and there is a fibreglass front cover panel available to conver the bay. However, they make you an instant leper as people just think you want a splitty but can't afford it and I think it'll look gash when done. The bay is now pretty old itself and deserves it's own identity instead of living in the splitys shadow.
There's some pics of my bus on my site (side and end profiles) so if anyone fancys a bit of photochop please feel free. I need ideas for colours too. I might even go for the nice clean undercoat with graffiti style graphics over the top.
Cheers folks, Smiler.

How about a set of cragar 5 spokes on red band tyres, metalflake paint,no bumpers and a set of '59 caddy rear lights with matching front indicators and a healthy rake. Something along the lines of this... or this...

Split front end wont fit, the difference between a split and a bay is a million miles, totally different sizes and profiles, and a baysplit front just looks pony.
I like the jacked in the back/big and littles idea through!

Have you not finished that Cortina yet? I remember on interford when you bought it and I was jealous as hell (I proposed to my wife in a MKV Cortina). Then it cropped up on PPC's forum and you were fitting a V6?
As for the bus. Slam it, paint it matt black. Job done!

Hi Keithyboy, erm... it's getting there. The Cosworth V6 is now fitted and running, just the instruments, exhaust and brakes to do. The body needs some minor surface rust repairs doiung but could really do with a respray. Thanks everyong for the pics and ideas. I quite like the rough and ready look but it's a family bus now so has to be clean. That kind of cancels out the high rear and low front aswell. It's going to have to be clean looking, either pastel, gloss. metalic, whatever. It could be two tone or all one colour, or there's the simple base coat with graffitti over the top idea. I shall look into other loights for the rear, and wheels will be chosen at the end but I like the ideas. I was thinking of de-bumpering it but again I'll decide on that at the end. Those toys look interesting, especialy the one with the side paniers! Oh, and I was brought up on scooby doo but there's already a later van round my neck of the woods done like that. Cheers, Smiler. P.S. This board is giving me a better response than the dedicated VW boards. Cheers guys!

The problem as i see with it , is that serious body mods on a bus rarely look good, roof chops, different headlights/tailights just all look terrible, thats why few people bother with them.... I TOTALLY understand your want to be different though.

some pics of what you've got would help mate ...but
keep the exterior appearance as VW intended. don't fcuk with body mods, and a split front is a horror thought (imo)
get on ebay.de and snap up some borbet A's. give it a nice tickle with the stick get the spare wheel off the front panel a splash of paint knock together an interior (unless you have the original to re-use, in which case use that)
job pretty much done

Pics of the van can be found on my website (link in my sig).
It will remain looking pretty much stock but was just looking into possibly the earlier non-flared arches. Rear lights I'd have to photoshop. The decide it looks gash and not bother!
Interior is a home brew and the full width bench/bed works very well. It'll only really be used as a day van as opposed to a full on camping tool but will retain a bed for occasional use (out on the raz, missus kicks me out et....)
Cheers,
Smiler.
