also theres saab 900/9000 you might consider ?

Sell what you've got
then buy something cheap to haul about in (like a calton or something for £200) and spend the reddies on the V8 project.

dude definately look at getting a CRX. i have one, and am on my second. i never buy the same thing twice but this is the exception.
they're real quick, extremely fun to drive, ultra reliable and you could get a mint 16v for £1k. 130bhp @ 7100rpm as standard with power down low as well, loads of resources and parts avialable. only weigh about 900kg and you get good fuel economy out of them. and you get the waves from other crx drivers 8)
you cant beat them for the money and they were designed in mid 80's so they sorta come in the retro catagory.
also modifying crx's with anything other than 15" wheels, engine mods and lowering is frowned upon. not many running lexus lights, bodykits or big wheels about.
pm me if you want any more info, i cant recommend them enough.

crx is a good choice as well as having a bit of space in the back, unlike other sawn off back end cars, such as a certain BMW... 3 series VERY good choice. I'd say a e34 would cost less and be more fun but probably too big going by the thread. failing that what about a pug 405 estate? or, go J. i reckon you need one of those extended looking subaru justy things

i really wish i had never sold mine, but 800 or so % profit is hard to pass by.

Woah, thanks gang! Loads of great ideas I had not considered or had forgot about. you're the best! After paying for two compromises over the year, I am a bit hungry for an all in one! I'm really feeling the Silvia if I can get a nice one. whats rust like on em? Hmm, the Carlon fits into the Volvo, Granada territory. I fancy summat nippy but I wont rule these out if one comes up thats right. Xantia, cheers Dom if its still around when I have shed a vehicle or two, I'll look at that, sounds bloody smart. Crx, never considered before, sounds like a bit of a serious hot hatch. st165? Oh a Celica, a double nomination here. these do look interesting and 4wd could be fun and useful, hmmm nice, don't see many of these the days, nice idea. Pugs, ok not bad, half fancy a 406. E34? Thirsty I'll bet but look at that beauty! another for the long list Saab, good one, thirsty but a good suggestion for the list. Hairnet as for scallys, some scroatbag has just pulled my mirror off and smashed the glass on the floor outside GF's house in withington! Grrr Realised that I DO actually use it!!! And finally yes, tram around in summat cheap and plough some dosh into the V8, good call. Short list has got longer, so many bargains out there I suppose... I feel the need to stay retro ish so the great cars don't die out around me. unless i'm buying a snotter, be nice to get one to keep...

I wouldn't suggest CR-X, They're alright but alot of their speed when you're driving is perception. Because you're so low to the ground it does feel as if you're going a lot faster than you actually are, I've also seen more than a few after crashes and they are completely toast. Which is my major dislike of them. I sold one recently for $400, a GenII Si, that'd be just over 100GBP, good bang for buck but I wouldn't recommend.
Also, the S12 is nice, I would love one myself (infact a mate of mine just bought one not long ago and I took the salvage truck out to get it for him) but what about the S13? from what I've seen/heard of the like from this forum, they can be picked up fairly cheap over there?
R30, 31 & 32 Skylines ?? Over here can be had for not much at all, from my understanding though, they're slim pickings on your side of the globe. Shame, they're good fun for nix.

^^^ partly true about the crx, you gots to remember tho in the UK we got more powerful versions than other places in the world and they're alot better kept over here generally.
mines doing about 6.5sec 0-60mph, not exactly slow for a 1.6 and it only has very very mild tuning; stainless back box, air filter and chip to raise the redline and fuel ratio in low revs.

Silvia out of the options listed, solid, quickish if it's a turbo, RWD J-fun as well....
I like the idea of an ST165 Celica too, very underrated cars IMO, loads of potential, and not as fiddly as the later 185's and so on. Lighter too!

Back to reality! just reading E30 reviews on carsurvey.org, no wonder folks have voted for em here, sound decent, a touring really could be a good thing, whats the best engine? 1.8?

I`ve voted for the S12 as I used to really enjoy mine. But I would also consider an E30 touring as well. Either a 318 or a 325. 318`s and 320`s are normally cheaper than 325`s and a 318 is quite a bit more economical than a 320. Sierra`s make a good choice as well. Still fancy getting a later twink at some point. Also going off the retro route I really enjoyed my 406 diesel. Paid 400 for it last december (N reg 1.9 TD) ran it until July this year did 17,000 mile in that time and sold it for 550. Averaged 35mpg (thats good for me) and other than servicing it cost me nothing other than a couple of tyres. Pretty good handling car as standard as well. On the lookout for a cheap 406 HDI at the minute to replace my primera daily driver.

good man, I actually don't commute anyway so that can go and so can the 9k miles, i'll stick with the bike to work thats reassuring. v8 will be my limited miler (if I get my finger out!) and i don't think its possible to insure that with an 'M' postcode not with roadsure anyway and it shoots up with flux, so its staying in a rough town where its cheaper! at least I know all proposals are in same insurance band, hardly surprising I suppose.
