1mm polyproylene is going to be very flimsy. I know it'll be light, but it'll also be a nightmare to try and keep anywhere near flat. I'd recommend going for at least two or three millimetre thick material if you want to maintain any kind of rigidity.
If you can find a good signmaking company near you, they usually have plastic sign board which is very light, strong and reasonably rigid. I've got lots of the stuff at the unit (kindly donated by Retro Cars/Retro Ford/Unity Media via Chris Pollitt) which was used as advertising board in the past. It's got graphics on one side but plain white on the other. It's exactly the sort of thing I'd be looking to use in your situation and it holds paint well too! Worth a thought....

Worth a thought.... not too worried about it being thin, it will be fixed close together and flocked which will add some strength to it as well. very good call though, can't believe i didn't think of sign backing - ta!

This stuff works really well. I've used some of the above haul to make interior panels and it came out lovely with just the right amount of flexibility whilst being nice and rigid once fixed.
