This is probably no help, but I just noticed that you can sing your post to the tune of "somebody to love" by queen.
Sensible point - did you get the tracking done after you fixed it last time?

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Yes bud the tracking was done each time we put new bits on .. Got a quote from ford last night 107 for each van lower ARM and (63 for the car versions) both plus vat . Comes out at 258 for the pair ... I'm hoping I can do better than that ...

It's one of those OE is best momemnts, they suffer bad enough even with the ford parts, escort and fiesta of the same period are allways in for bottom arms

IME on a daily driven car it is either OE (preferably Genuine) or nothing, with you getting what you pay for in that instance.
Whilst I could give you examples as long as my arm (my grandad's Mk5 bushes started cracking after 2 years and 1000 miles!) I have found on an old daily that genuine parts would last around 3 times as long as pattern items (springs still stay taught, dampers don't lose their consistency as quickly, and drop links do not keep dying (I changed 3 pattern drop links once the the side that was still on the genuine item (the pattern item was put on after a garage falsely identified the issue)).
