Slightly O/T buy I know there a few on here who love the tough old swedes and their reputation for being indestructable... was fortunate enough to be involved in an accident on Monday, a guy was kindly giving me a lift home from work and just short of dropping me off, we had to pull up behind a Discovery turning right, waiting for oncoming traffic. About 5 seconds later, as he's starting to move so we've taken the brake off to go there's an almghty WHUMP and the car shoots forward. Some plank in an Ibiza has completely failed to notice a Discovery AND a 850 T5 estate stationary in the road and ploughed straight into the back of us. Luckily the Disco had moved sufficiently not to have been involved. Guess who came off worse? Spanish tinfoil or Swedish steel? For reference, the dent to the right of the tailgate handle on the T5 was already there so the sum extent of the damage is a thumb-sized dent below the numberplate, and the towbar is now an inch closer to the bumper. and a cracked rear lense. Unfortunately the Ibiza driver was uninsured, and on a provisional licence, so it's gotta come out of my mate's own insurance. The police were less than impressed and hauled him straight off down the station and siezed his car. It surprised me as I've seen the car around and always looked quite well cared for, not the kind of driver to not bother with insurance.... you'd think!

my dad was in an accident in a mondeo a few years back, went into the back of a volvo 840 and squashed the front in then as ironic as it sounds another "tank" a small volvo with the pointy front, cant think of its name right now ploughed into the back of him! Mondeo a write off being squished to about 2/3rds of its length. Both ovlovs fine, 840 cracked lense pointy one craked front bumper!
I'm thinkin they is a very tough breed!

A good result alround. An ibiza with big wheels gets mullered, the uninsured driver gets busted by the DFR's and your volvo remains (amolst) unmarked.
TBH I'd not bother claiming off my own insurance for such little damage.
PS Towbars FTW! They are ideal for adding just that little extra damage to the vehicle of any n0b head who may plough into you. Can often make the difference between repairable and SUMMARILY PHOOKED.

Looks good for the Volvo! However, what damage has the towbar being pushed in done to the underside? With something as hi-po as a T5 I’d want to be ultra-careful that the floorpan hasn’t been distorted in any way.
Seems harsh on your mate that he’s going to lose out by having to pay an excess and loss of some no claims, unless that can at least be recovered from the Ibiza twerp? The reason it looked well cared-for is that he’d got extra money to spend on it from not paying insurance…

When i got hit in my mini and it was written off by an uninsured driver i ended up going through the M.I.B (Motor Insurers Bereau) It took a long time and i didnt get quite what the car was worth, but as i was 3rd party only it's better than a kick in the head.. Mike

Volvo owner should be given the Ibiza to strip and sell as compensation.

We were sat in my dads Volvo at a set of temporary traffic lights once, when another (older) volvo came careering round the corner and hit us at about 20mph or so. He suffered a broken numberplate and we had a scuffed tow bar cover

Volvos do have crumple zones, I've had the body shell guided tour on my 240 by a colleague who knows about them. Having said that, they are extra tough. Someone ran into the back of mine, I heard the bang, felt the jolt, grinned at them in the mirror and drove off safe in the knowledge that their car would come off worse ;D

My mate the volvo owner has eleventy years NCB and it's all protected and stuff so he's claiming anyway, he rang them and they've said it won't really affect his premiums so he's claiming. TBH the 850 isn't as tidy as it could be, it was a free car from a mate and he was gonna chop it in for something else and accept the few hundred the dealer would give him so it might well get written off just for the tailgate. The towbar has pushed the wheel well up slightly, but only about 1/8th inch so a thump from the inside would sort it.

Ah... Southwell Lane in Sunniest Kirkby I believe?
Tales like that are why my kids are transported in a Volvo estate (if nothing else the cars are so big any accident happens a long way from where you are sitting!)

they're hard, they don't rust and they're quick. You cant not like volvos!!
Have to say though that I thought that the legendary "unbendabilty" ended with the 200/900/700 serires and not the 850s/V70s Its great to see that the FWD models are just as tough.
The ibiza owner should have spent the money used buying his car on car insurance and bought an old clunker instead. don't feel sorry for him at all- I pay £££££ for my insurance and people like him really pi$$ me off!

That's ace, Volvos are great... Mate was rear ended in his 760 the other week by a Megane. Very similar outcome to the above...

Hehe.. nice thread, you only need to look at a Volvo in a bit of depth to realise how solid they are. My 360 has near 2" diam side impact bars in the front doors - and this is a design from 1976 Alot of early- mid 90's side impact 'protection' is merely a folded piece of metal in the door

Have to say though, the car doing the hitting always seems to come off worse as the front is designed to crumple more than the rear. Don't forget that I think you can get the "seats in the boot" option on the V70 so you don't want it crumpling too much! Have seen a similar incident involving two Sierras. The one that got rear ended (a mk1 Ghia with smoked rear lights, tasty) got off with a scuff on the bumper. The Sapphire that hit it had smashed headlights, bumper and bonnet.
Still, better in a Volvo than a 2CV or a Mini! Who'd want to drive one of those lethal motors?
Ah....

oneday ill have one on the road What's your excuse? For young drivers I found they were the best choice for something with reasonable power for very cheap insurance. I got my first 360glt when I was 19 and it cost £40 more than a Group 5 Skoda Favorit

Ive always found that the fronts of cars are stronger, due to the stronger areas needed to mount the engine, suspension e.t.c The boot on most cars is simply designed to crumple in a smash. Obviously nobody told seat that.....
