Mine's basically trying and failing to remember the mileage it's due, so I end up doing it too often to make sure. Or in the case of my Passat, it consists of me reading this thread, and going "Oh curse word, mine's got to be due soon, I wonder if I've still got the advert from when I bought it in my bookmarks.... hey look, it was on 155k then, and 163k now, so yeah, I think it's due, but I can't remember the correct service intervals anyway." Woops.
But on a more useful note, I've always liked the already mentioned tip-ex/sharpie on the relevant component (or cover). Even if nothing goes wrong, you'll see it when you top up the screen wash/check the oil and water levels between services.
