this may seem like a dead amatuer question and I'm sorry. passed my driving test 3 months ago and hopped straight into my viva of which the fan belt sqweeled everywhere to the point i had to get bumped out of the petrol station (highly embaressing) after this ordeal i replaced the belt. However since replacing it it squeels on start up for about 15 seconds and then stops, it also squeels when I'm driving in the rain and it will also squeel with the lights on or with a car full of people, obviously the harder it has to work the more it will squeel and its just dead annoying and embaressing. what should i be doing, loosening/tightening/powdering
any help would be great thanks

the belt probably just needs a little more tightening, not to tight that it destroys the alternator bearings, a new one will stretch initially!
if the engine is well worn, you can get to the point where belts bottom out in the V of the pulleys, so never get tight enough, or worn alternator bearings can mean that the belt slips, but just try tightening the belt first, just a little mind!

My old fiesta used to go through alternator belts loads. The next owner told me the alternator was a tiny bit out of alignment so didn't really tension the belt properly. If the belt is old and feels hard and plasticy or is perished you should replace it- a fresh rubbery one will grip far better and you won't be risking it snapping as much

There should be no more than an inch of total deflection [movement up and down] when pressing/pulling on the centre of the longest length of belt between two pulleys.
That's how I was taught anyway.

Agreed Dan. it can also be an early sign of a failing water pump. Is it beginning to dribble any water- are there any rust stains arounds it? Not always the case- but it can be a good indicator

As above - check tension and alignment of the pulleys and it's always worth cleaning the inside of the pulley where the fan 'grips'.
