My 2003 Peugeot Expert, I'm converting into a camper, is off the road as needs clutch repair. Nightmare to work on and horrendous parts prices so I've decided that it'll be sold idc and replaced with a proper retro van / camper In the running at present of course is the VW bay window but they demand an inflated "scene tax" so probably not viable then there is Transit, Bedford CA & CF, Austin J4, and Commer PB. Standard Atlas is not included as too rare. I'm not interested in Citroen H van nor can I think of any other European vans that might appeal. The plan ( there is always a plan ;D ) therefore is to fit modern engine and camper interior into a classic camper. I don't mind adapting a minibus but aren't interested in butchering any van that has managed to survive this long so none of that category would be harmed Two questions althought I've basically already got the answer to the second Can anyone think of a van etc suitable for a camper other than the Transit, CA, CF, J4 or PB. I'm not interested in CDV (car derived vans) such as Escort, HA, A60, Marina etc. Also other than the CA is there any van people can think of with a proper chassis (I know it's the only one from my list above with) ? Sherpa / LDV. Easily lowered if req'd, later ones have Ford diesels, loads of standard engine options but still loads of room for alternatives, rear wheel drive, range of body sizes ( 200 300 and 400 series), range of diff ratios, you would almost certainly be the only one there with one of them but most of all they're CHEAP.

The LDV Sherpa/200/Pilot was available with a proper separate chassis - IIRC either as a chassiscab for custom stuff or as a dropside pickup.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Had a LDV 200. Never want one again I should have added it need to be big enough to carry my mobility buggy so that rules out Fiat 900. At the moment it's the Bedford CA Romany that is the only contender. Proper chassis, looks, column change, sliding doors, IFS, cheap all tick the boxes for me. ;D Paul H

CA romany- most have a crappy 3 speed box and are good for about 45mph though. Have seen one with a 2.0 pinto fitted though.

Ok I started this thread and am now thinking "sideways". What common US vans have a seperate chassis ? In fact what are the common vans over there anyway - the US equivalent to our Transits, LDV, Bedford CF, etc ? I don't mean the versions like this - which are now rare and collectable but the "bread and butter" vans that were used by the military on bases, trademen, campers and such that are still reasonable to buy - say under £3000 but preferably cheaper.
