I decided to see what I could do with the blowing exhaust on my new (old but I only bought it the day before yesterday) van today and found this. At some point somebody has tried to repair the leaking exhaust by cutting section of pipe and cutting it down the middle. They then sandwhiched it over the hole with cable ties and lots of gungum.
This is the section cut out, I'm not sure how old this bodge is but its certainlly wasn't still gas tight if it had ever been. So I cut it out planning to weld in a similar length section off a scrap exhaust. That allowed me to look down the pipe.
The pipe was nearly completly blocked with hardened gungum! No wonder she now runs smoother and has noticebly more grunt!
This will certainlly make me think before I reach for a tin of exhaust paste to plug some holes though. Not very nice really.
This is what replaced that nasty bodge and the difference in performance is immense.
