Alright amigos, Need to know where I can get some roll cage padding at a decent price that isn't pipe lagging in drag... Any suggestions? I can get it from America at $100 for five 2metre lengths in FIA/SFi approved flavour. But shipping is another $100 on top, and I ain't got no credit card, just Paypal - which typically my chosen supplier over there doesn't feel... Wishing to keep it simpler I'm quite happy to spend my money in this country, but between Demon Tweeks and ebay there seems to be not alot about. Lots of people list it (splendid bit of contradiction there... ), but I thought I'd ask in case anybody knew of a suitable alternative/secret material/bargain supplier. Nice. Cheers. Bryn ;D

Its a coarser grain than lagging though and harder to bend etc.

Definately. The amount your head bangs around when in the car - especially with a big helmet on) its necessary. In the rally car my bonce is always knocking the bar along the top of the side window. (Navigator with head in notes). This is why we changed from pipe lagging to proper stuff.

Plus in a normal car you only have a seatbelt and folding seat, I've got a bucket and five point harness. It all comes to down to damage limitation, I'm just baulking at the padding costing over a hundred pounds when the average cage costs £4-500... But then why cut corners now? Yeegads, being responsible is curse word.

I'm sure one of the cage/chassis builders in this country could sort you out of point you in the right direction - chris isaacs, andy robinson, hauser race cars, john sleath john webster etc
also places like rallynuts.com sell it

Any rally/race shop should sell it. I've used pipe lagging before but really it's not an area you want to be cutting corners.

I used Safety Devices padding FIAspec. It is only a semi circle. My test for roll cage padding is to put it against a solid wall and thump it hard with your fist. If you can do this and not bust you hand it is OK. I would not dare to try this with pipe lagging........ Conform is probably the foam you are thinking of. It is heat reactive, the colder it is the harder it is and when it gets warm it conforms ( !!) to your shape. It is expensive but is commonly used for people who have to sit for long periods of time (fighter pilots, disabled and elderly) So if you want some cheap........... John

Thanks for the help guys, I've explored all the avenues in this country and the cheapest FIA approved I can find is £26 plus vat a length. So I'm going to sort out the American shipping issues and get it from there ($18 a length), I'll let you know how I get on. Punch a wall, good idea for a product test there John, i like that. I'll try and find some of that Conform foam too, might be able to buy it in a sheet maybe?

Everyone I know buys from the states I do know if you try and get pipe lagging past an MSA scrutineer at a drag strip he'll bounce you too - it was their big thing this year

Bryn, I think the cheapest place for Conform may be the people who make cushions for the elderly or wheelchairs because it will not have the motorsport or aircraft price tag. The other use is for pedestrian safety leg forms when testing bumpers on cars.

Haha,
Yeah, had a wander around a few foam based internet sites this afternoon. It's made by a company in France called Carpenter and they've got a Uk base, but it seems (quite rightly) expensive and doesn't seem to be available in a suitable format for me to modify. A wheelchair cushion is the best part of £70.
It would appear if you want the job done properly, then paying for it is the only way. Let's face it, if I cheat I could loose my life. At least if I do it properly I can sit down the pub and say 'good thing I paid a £100 for padding'.
