I could be wrong but i remember them snapping or cracking when used hard, I can remember fitting fairly substantial plates to a rather rapid HS

Chevette is 4x100, so the world is your oyster when it comes to wheels.
For brake upgrades look at what the Scimitar SS1 guys do - the small Scimmies use Chevette front suspension with different shock/spring mounts.
Not sure if the springs are a standard-ish size or not. I suspect that all the service stuff (wheel bearings, ball joints, etc.) is available - try asking Scimitar or Chevette clubs?

there was a pro street mk1 cortina about a few years ago with a small block chevy on a chevvette front crossmember iirc, so they seem up to the weight

Ball joints (around £10-20) and wheel bearing (around £13) are easily avaliable from either QH or Firstline, and are inexpensive. Uprated springs are also avaliable there is a list on eBay for fronts.

SS1 lower wishbones are Chevette, uppers are modified to take inboard dampers, caliper is metro (non turbo), hub and disc is bespoke to SS1. We fit Chevette hubs to take the Carlton vented disc with Volvo calipers :-)

slightly better are audi 80 1985-87 16v discs (256mm) machined to manta/chevette bolt fitting then use astra/calibra 16v calipers (recon off bigg red) these will stop a train had them on my manta 16v coupe perfect with ferodo comp pads.
depending on room wheel size you could go to audi 80 16v turbo discs 282mm with vectra b 2.5 calipers these will really pull you down but watch for lock up in damp weather.
master cylinder I used was an opel monza 3.0 non abs 23mm if that helps. springs are from 380 lbs to 600lbs from a few places on net.

Yeah, until you find the calipers hit the Lwr wisbones on lock which is an MOT Fail You can get round it by limiting the lock but that is a less than Ideal solution...... I have a pair of GTE Calipers spare if you want to go down this route ;D I'e gone for Elise calipers (As they are 1.5kg a side rather than 4kg like GTE or Volvo calipers ), Audi 256mm vented discs remachined for now and that lot should fit under a CXR Compomotive 13" wheel ;D But Elise calipers will need new Brackets machining as they are radial mount rather than lug mount. This does make it easier to change disc size later though as its only a spacer needed between caliper and bracket ;D Volvo/carlton is bolt on, very effective but not light GTE Caliper/ GTE disc & spacer / Audi disc is: larger disc, good power, no lighter but less lock Ideal for me would be carlton disc but at 256/260 dia, elise caliper on bespoke bracket. Loads lighter, no lock restriction, great pad choice and good power...... we will see ;D

Off the shelf parts, no machining, spacers or caliper adaptors required - and no need to go bigger on the SS1 VW or E30 4x100 wheels fit nicely
