Hi Carl, thanks for that. Much appreciated. The one bit i could do with tracking down ASAP are the roof aerials. I have drilled pilot holes through the roof skin using the original roof for reference. But i only drilled small holes as i didnt want to drill them too big. Id like to have the aerial holes drilled before it gets painted which is imminent, so do you know anyone who has silver/chrome/stainless aerials same as in the pics below? They are hard to make out, but the ones covered in the tinsel give an indication that they are pretty long, and they would have been silver not black. Hi Jim Sorry about this, I thought I'd replied to you but it doesn't seem to have posted! Anyway, here's a pic of the type of aerial that is needed. This one is for my Capri, when I actually grow a set big enough to go drilling roof holes......... The aerial to it's base is 35" long. It attaches to the wired base by a grub screw. The wired base is about 11mm at it's widest point where it comes through the roof. I'm still trying to source some from our group members, but at least you know what you're looking for now. Also got a little bit more interior information from an ex-Lancs bobby which is another piece in the puzzle. "I used to drive D 821 GEC. Switches were mounted either side of the central vents on those cars and toggle switch dash mounted for the nee naws" Not a great deal, but something. It also matches the interior pic that was posted on here on 5 Dec, must have been a common place for fitment. Whilst we don't know what sort of switches were used, I'd go with what you were given, they're ultra-rare and worth showing off anyway. It's up to you if you want to cut out holes in your dash or use poetic licence and build a switch box though........!!!! It was also suggested that you get in contact with the Lancs retired police officers association. There may be others on there with better memories, or even pictures. This looks like the right website: www.narpo.org/index.php/link/lancashire.htmlThe car is looking superb. I'm going to set an evening aside when my wife is out, and read the whole lot again!! I'll be in touch with any info or aerial news if I get any. Best regards Carl.

Top detective work Carl, much appreciated. I need to go back through this thread and register lots of the photographs as many of them are missing which is most frustrating.

Reading this and impressed with the dedication to detail. Would this be a possible candidate for the antenna's on the car?? It mounts by an M8 nut/bolt. Its a marine antenna and can be got from ebay. Ebay link clickyHope this helps.

Thanks rascal. Looks very close. Ideally I would like silver chrome finish like original, but a good fall back option.

I had a rather frustrating Christmas. I had hoped to spend four consecutive days in the garage, but i got a rather nasty cold so thought better of it and took it easy. My original cunning plan was to restore/rebuild/clean/polish all of the interior components, wiring looms, brackets etc so that when the car comes back from the bodyshop it would go together relatively quickly and cleanly. Unfortunately this hasnt happened. Largely because i have been fairly disorganised, and when i stripped the car i put stuff in piles, rather than boxes. So now i return to the piles and they have merged and migrated into one large messy pile from which it is difficult to find the parts i need. One fairly large and obvious lump was the pedal box and steering column assembly. This was complete, but the black paint was peeling, and the felt washers that located the pedals on the pedal box were worn which caused some slack and resultant left right wobble. I hate that, so i took it all apart and rebuilt it using felt washers and shims from another spare pedal box. End result is a nice shiny assembly, and pedals that just rotate on the shaft with no lateral slop. Very nice. Old rusty wobbly pedal box and column De-rusted, stripped and primered Pedals re painted Column re painted All back together

Next up was the heater blower unit. All of the foam that had been on the diverter flaps had turned to dust, and the matrix looked decidedly dodgy. Luckily for me my SD1 has the later type of blower unit with the same matrix as found in the Montego. These come up from time to time on ebay, so i bought one some time ago for not very much. I pulled the unit apart and removed all of the flaps, taking many photographs at the same time. These are surprisingly complicated units so ther was an explosion of parts in a short period of time. Finding the correct type of foam was a pain. I bought some 5mm neoprene foam which felt very soft, but it was not soft enough. Eventually i found some 5mm open cell foam on adhesive sheets. They were actually for repairing old cameras but it worked perfectly. The only problem was the sheets were 5 x 8" so for the larger flaps i had to use several sheets. I also cleaned out and tested the motor. It ran fine with no nasty noises. Dusty old unit All the flaps removed and ready for cleaning up Primered Painted Ready to reassemble Case back together Riveting the base back on New matrix Started putting the rods back on an adjusting it Still to do are to replace the otter switch and associated. I also need to epoxy the pipes and refit them with a new gasket. I have already bought new heater hoses ready to go on.

Continued on with the heater blower unit. I soldered on a new otter switch and resistor, then used a glue gun to hold it onto the case. I tested all the function of the motor and at the different speeds with my trusty power probe. All ok and work well with the readjusted levers. Incidentally i don't think the levers were every properly connected in this car. With the levers set as per original the recirculation flap never actually closed. I think it had been incorrectly assembled, so i fixed that so it works. Then i got to work on the heater pipes. Mine were separate from the plate that goes onto the bulkhead. i think the rivet had broken off, as i don recall having drilled it out. Perhaps it never had one. Anyway i tack welded the pipes to the plate to ensure they stay in alignment, as there is a risk they could forced to one side, damaging the seal to the matrix. The pipes had been soaking in de-ox rust removal fluid, and when they came out were pretty pitted. So i gave them a decent coat in epoxy. This will hopefully keep the rust at bay, and also fills in all the pitting so the new hoses have a smooth surface to seal against. Then i continued to prepare all of the bulkhead blanking plugs. Freshly painted with new m6 nuts and bolts, plus neoprene foam. Spot the difference, old vs new!
