Something is rattling about my head, to do with diesel SD1s reversing uphill and munching the gearbox? Could be waaaaaaaay off. Nice debrief! Never heard that one before. It’s the same lt77 gearbox as in all the sd1’s, Jaguars, p6, morgan, TVR, Sherpa etc. Only difference is 5th gear is longer for a higher top speed as diesels don't rev that high.

I had a couple of scorpios as company cars with that engine, they were surprisingly good, certainly did more then 102mph, I remember driving across Germany at well over 100, at night in the rear view mirror there were two distinct voritces of smoke trailing behind like an aircraft vapour trail lit up in the vehicles you overtook, those were the days!
The only problem I had in well over 100,000km (used to drive from Germany to the uk every week) was the boost hoses blowing off, it certainly smoked then.

Great stuff, that one looks less corrosion more bashed about than your Police car when you took it on, but looking at where it is parked surrounded by heavy objects and stood on mud will have to wait for your report. You cant go wrong with the VM diesel, tough as old boots and easy to work on. Looking forward to the next updates

I also got to meet people from here. It was great to put faces to names. Sorry I didn't get to meet Darren or catch up with Chris, but will do next time! to be fair i could have come and asked if you were Jim but then my brain said hang on a minute, don't forget the crippling introversion there was no mistaking chris though because he had come directly from a late 1940s jazz lounge *click* p.s LT77 also used in bazillion defenders.

But then ebay screwed me over an I have ended up with another project. In the form of this ultra rare, but ultra fcuked Rover 2400 SD Turbo diesel! I had to triple check the plate on that, I had one just like that when thane company decided that all company cars were to be diesels. Mine was that colour, but the plate was, from memory AnnnBNR I think. Only had it for about a year as I sponged jobs, but it was lovely to drive and the low end grunt was epic. Really looking forward to this one.

All I know was that the previous owner bought it when it was 3 years old. I’m hoping to get a copy of the original logbook from previous owner.

You know you can apply for logbook copies from the DVLA for cars that you own? It costs, of course, but they do provide the service.

Didn’t realise that. It would be good to know it’s full history

Didn't think you could top a police SD1 and yet here we are. Diesel SD1 survivors are in single figures on these now, aren't they? I knew of one some years ago that my brother was chasing - also doom blue - because he thought the farmer was pulling his leg about it. Turned out he wasn't, and had a miserly O series engined one too. Both were utterly ruined, and that was back in the late 90s.

According to how many left there are 2 taxed and about 20 on sorn.

Just thought I'd repost these photos, taken on Christmas morning, 1986 at the start of our early shift (6am-2pm), 32 years ago today. So good to see that one of these great cars will live on. Can't wait to see it in the flesh in the New Year.

Not quite true. They wont supply the full info V888 (iirc) but they will answer direct questions about the car as long as you don't ask for previous owners & details as it falls under data protection.

I got a call this morning from the Sd1 club. Someone had to pull out of the London Classic Car Show at the Excel due to family reasons. So they asked me if I could make it. Cue a call to my girlfriend for permission, as it was Valentine’s Day, and then a call to my Dad for a lift home. Car is safely dropped off. Sadly I won’t be there Friday or Saturday, but I’ll be there on Sunday afternoon. Car sounded great going through blackwall tunnel.
