What a fascinating thread. I have just spent a couple of hours going through it all and then looking for and scanning photos of the car when it was working.
I drove D822 GEC regularly when it was one of the traffic cars based at Ormskirk, Lancashire. It carried me on quite a few pursuits of stolen cars and I loved driving it.
I have a few pictures, and if I can work out how to upload them I will add them to this thread.

I think I should explain that the blue tinsel wasn't a standard fitting to our cars. These photos were all taken on Christmas Day, 1987 so our Christmas celebrations were on hold until after our 6am-2pm shift.
Not such a happy Christmas for the Ford Capri driver though, but he was uninjured and hadn't been drinking. Pilot error!

When I stripped the car down I found some minor damage to the near side front wing around the indictor. It had a bit of filler in it. Do you remember and light collisions in that area?

Erm.... I think I might need to speak to my solicitor!
I'll have to check, but one of my pursuits of a stolen Fiesta XR2 did result in me going sideways along a grass verge, but the offside was leading at that point, and it tore the front spoiler off. Not sure if I was in D821 or D822 that night, but I did scare my colleague who was new to the job.

This is great!
Have been following since you started this log and your commitment to this build is outstanding.
One question, notice that the rear has 2 small high level fog lights presumably drilled into the roof - is your commitment sufficient to drill into your perfect roof to re-attach these??

My feelings as well, reading the posting of the guys that actually drove 822 (what was the service number ID of it when in service) really shows the history of it and how saving it is so important.

It's also massive mojo boost for me too. I absolutely love the shots of that car on duty with that Capri. Proper 80's nostalgia trip!

To be honest I haven't decided yet. I probably should for originality sake especially I've not seen another sd1 poilce car with them fitted like that. But it would pain me to drill the holes. I also like the full length stripes as were on D828GEC but clearly mine just had stripes to the front and rear wings. I've got a while before I need to make the decision.

This really is one of my favourite threads on here. Amazing sleuth work, and hats off to the original driver who has filled you in with period photos! Just showed my fiancée and she suggested you try and track down the Capri as well!

Wow fascinating that a former officer and driver of this car had found your thread and even still had photos of it. Has to be fate. The SD1s are the earliest police cars I remember as a little boy

Ken has kindly sent me a couple of more stories of his adventures with the car when it was first in service.
"The week that D821 & D822 arrived on our traffic group there was a major incident within one of the prisons in Lancashire and my colleague and I were together in one of Rovers - I will identify which car it was when I can - when we were called to man an outer perimeter whilst the prison service went in to deal with the large scale disorder inside. I suppose we were there in case the prisoners broke out, but looking back, we were more worried about having to leave the engine ticking over all night with the headlights illuminating a section of the wall. It must have been summer because we put the heater on full to try and draw some of the heat away from the engine which was still running in.
That night we eventually had to escort a prison van to Hull Prison with some of the prisoners as they were dispersed around the country. It was a long drive behind the prison van that was flat out at 45mph. The journey back in the early hours was significantly quicker!"
...
"On 2nd May, 1987 I was working an evening shift in D822 GEC using the call-sign Charlie Two Car One (C2C1) when I got a radio message that a Ford Escort RS Turbo (white) had been stolen from Clayton Green, near Preston a few minutes earlier. I decided to make my way to the junction of the M6 and M58 motorways because if the car was heading to Liverpool, as many did after being stolen from our area, it could go M6 south and then M58 west towards the city. I had been parked there for 3 minutes when, sure enough, the RS Turbo went past me. Game on!
I accelerated from a standing start and D822 was behind it pretty quickly. The motorway was fairly quiet so I flicked on the blue lights and that was it. We went from 70 to 120 mph and held it at that for the next 10 miles until we got to the end of the M58. I had radioed my progress and was assured that Merseyside patrols would be at the end of the M58 to intercept. Well, they were there, but we flashed past them and didn't see them again. The Escort clipped some road cones on the A59 and did a little damage to the front nearside but the driver didn't slow down.
It was a Saturday evening, about 11pm so it wasn't the best place to be pursuing a stolen car and as the driver became more reckless I had to make the decision to back off a little, especially when the escort went for an overtake on a car that was indicating to turn right. It must have frightened the innocent driver as the RS Turbo went past him at speed and as I backed off the throttle to allow the car to make its turn I briefly lost sight of the target car.
It had turned left and sharp right before the driver stopped in a side street and ran. I found the car a couple of minutes later but the driver had escaped. It turned out that while I was in pursuit, an officer had been sent to speak to the owner of the RS Turbo and they were both sitting in his police car listening to the pursuit on the police radio. He was pleased to get his car back with just a little dent to the front nearside corner.
I later calculated that I had chased the stolen car for 16 miles at an average speed of about 96mph.
Great memories."
