Best option is don't drive through a feilds but failing that alloy or steel ? alloy - i'd JB weld it, did a passat 18 months ago with a scraped through sump and that's still holding, just make sure it's clean and roughed up with some 80 grit or so then it will stick ok, also done a few golfs the same (i tend to work sheds that the owners only spend money on come MOT time) steel - drain clean weld refill, just keep the welds short or you'll burn more holes than fill ;D ask me how i know that just did a fuel tank (somone drilled it to drain the fuel off) took me longer to seal the burnthroughs than the origional drill hole and then a JB welded it after to get the pin hioles seals as well. Either way you gonna have to drain it, preferably remove it and clean it propper like

Yea its a steel sump I had a feeling it was time to dig the welder out.
JB weld not be ok tho? its not as if its a massive hole, I'm driving the car today, just dip the oil before i go!!

Please don't even contemplate welding it when it is still on the engine !!!!!!
