Okay folks,... how does de-guttering work,.. what are the pitfalls.. is it relatively cheap (ie an angle grinder and elbow grease? )
Also as an aside, how good will colour match paint be on a 25+ year old car... I'm assuming the paint has faded (its silver so can it fade?) and that just getting a paint that is the same colour code as whats on the car won't be enough,... what do I do once the thing has been deguttered and needs to be matched into the current paint?? Or it is a total respray job?

I rekon you'd be looking at a full blow over to get any kinda match once you'd done it. De guttering means grinding it back, welding it up then smoothing your welds back, it's a pretty hard job to do right, and it HAS to be right. Looks cool, but on some cars can cause problems with water not having anywhere to "channel" this usually means you end up with water in the car as it runs straight down into your door openings... there's nothing to "catch" it you see

^^ I would say that pretty much covers it. And I would echo Cappucinocruisers comments that it will be a bit of a mare to do it right and unless it was done right I think it would spoil your car.
However if it was done right it would probably look pretty cool. It might be possible to get away with just respraying the roof and blending it in on the pillars as long as you had the colour matched to your car. Or you could always have the roof a different colour

Get the colour matched to the faded paint thats what i did and it came out perfect, i just took the fuel filler cover along to the shop and it cost about £15 to get it matched. The main problem with doing gutters is welding a roof skin makes it warp unless your a genius with sheet metal

That said a mini which has been de guttered a not de seamed will look pretty silly

Its funny this has come up because i've been pondering de-guttering the cortina latley. The only thing that puts me off is that its got a lot of lead around the joints and it'll all have to be cleaned off before i can even think about welding it.

As CC origianlly said, deseaming(guttering) will almost always lead to a car that leaks - id only consider it if it was a garaged car that only saw roads in summer.

If you de-gutter your car, how will you fit the old-skool-rat-look-not-in-any-way-cliche-vintage-roof-rack? ;D

I was confused, as I have that picture saved on my computer and was wondering how you were going to de-gutter it, or whether you had a surprise ride up your sleeve! Adam

i considered de-guttering the pickup cos it has very 'utilitarian' gutters going down the sides of the rear screen... look pap... the gutters join the roof panel to the sides don't they ? don't wanns mess with that ! Rob
