I'll be attempting to replace the downpipe on my 8v next weekend. It's blowing at the flexi. I've had a poke around and there's 6 16mm nuts holding the downpipe onto the manifold.
Any hints or tips on how to do the job. I'm guessing it's going to be a PITA as everything else has been so far.

bang a 4 branch on There's not enough money in the world to persuade me to go anywhere near those manifold studs Plus, I won a brand new Bosal downpipe for £21 off Thiefbay

It takes minutes to do. you probably going to need a socket uj, and you need a couple of extensions. but all it literally is , is undoing 6 bolts.

Spend the week before dosing them with some form of penatrating fluid and undo them when the manifold is hot if possable.

Spend the week before dosing them with some form of penatrating fluid and undo them when the manifold is hot if possable. +1 on this. Access is a bit of a slag, but what makes it a pain in the ar$e is the fact that the bolts are usually corroded, and really stiff all the way out. Use some proper penetrating oil, not WD40! I recommend plus gas. Get plenty on there a few days in advance. Repeat the dose as often as possible to make your life easier, and ideally wire brush the loose rust off to allow the oil to soak in better. I like to remove 4 of the 6 bolts from above, a couple are only really workable from below. You'll need a load of extensions and a U joint ideally. Make sure you're using 6 sided sockets. All in all it's not a pleasant job (the most awkward part of an otherwise dead pleasant job of taking the engine out) but if you remember to use plenty of plus gas on them you'll wonder what people were moaning about.

Me and a mate finally got round to doing it yesterday after literally weeks of rain. The six bolts cracked off nicely, which was a surprise. Strangely, there was four 16mm bolts, one 15mm and one 17mm. Getting the old downpipe out was the main issue so we unbolted the subframe and it eventually came out. The downpipe was quite solid but the gasket was just rusty powder.
Overall, it was unpleasant and took about 3 hours. If I had a ramp it would have been half that.
I'll also give a plug for 3-in-one penetrating oil, excellent stuff!

I was going to mention that space is a bit of an issue when trying to get it out of the bay and the new one in lol
I've removed the front engine mount and lowered the engine forwards on the jack to give more room previously

It had new wishbones just before I bought it so we went for the subframe bolts. It's ridiculous really, the space you've got.
