OK went up to my lockup this morning to get a tailgate for my mate, been a few weeks since i was up and found some scumag had broken in. Cut through the lock hasps (must have taken a while) I was worried when we opened the door but low and behold nothing touched.............nothing.
6 Cars in there (2 x MK1 Golf gti, 1 x Mk2 Gti, 2 x Citroen Dyanes and a 2CV) loads of panels, gearboxes etc about the place.
Nothing touched, now don't get me wrong I'm pleased nothings missing but why bother breaking in if nothing taken???
Aaaaghhhh!!!!! I would almost something was gone. But hey, its re-secured with better locks and stuff, so touch wood an all that.

yeah makes you more nervous than if the place had been emptied! My mum's house got broken into and it was only the fact that a cupboard door had been left open that alerted her.... very clean entry and NOTHING taken... save for a mobile phone that had possibly been lost days before! Makes you wonder if they've just broken into your garage for a look, make a list, then come back when they've got buyers. sorry, didn't mean to make you more nervous.... best you can do is whap some big hardened steel locks on, and make sure everything is insured!

From the point of view of your average ratboy they probably just saw a load of old motors and bits that are no good to anyone they deal with. If your lock up had been full of Imprezas and TSW rims and later GTi bits it would have been a different story. I can`t see them coming back for some Dyane bits that the local chop shop have asked them to get hold of. Still, its good you`ve got the place more secure as you don't want them in there in the first place. I once had the 323 broken into - very skillfully with no real damage - and I had foolishly left the pop-off front for the sony CD player in the glovebox and they didnt take any of it , and the`d been through the glovebox as it was hanging open, what do you make of that?

Probably got disturbed.... i once had my beetle broken into, they spent that long trying to work out where the CD changer was (behind back seat, which has a hidden little release) that they left my cheque book, a pile of CDs, the head unit, my toolbox for work and pretty much everything else apart from the remote for the head unit.

Very lucky. As you have said though it is more of a concern that nothing was took. All you can do now is try and get it secure as possible.

Get bigger locks. If you put big locks on your garage it screams out that there's something in there worth having so it's almost certain that someone will try to break in. This means there's no point using big locks, the only ones worth using are the biggest ones you can lay your hands on.
I have bolts with 1" diameter hardened steel shafts that go 3" into the frame and two different-style monster padlocks the cover over the bolt. Basically they would have to use some serious power tools to get in or be good at two types of lock picking. The only worry is if I lose the key because I won't be getting back in very easily. For stupid big padlocks and ground anchors to hold the door shut try motorbike security stuff. Basically the best on the market.

I have renewed clasps with much bigger ones and bigger padlocks. intend to put a bike ground anchor into the floor inside and use a big meaty lock to secure with also. They wont be getting in again.

They wont be getting in again. Sorry to burst your bubble mate, the nit picking scum will always try another avenue. Guy I bought my house from had bikes and a car or two nicked from the garage, he then ran stainless plates on hinges on the inside with 4, yes FOUR locks, at intervals, also stainless plate over the door and windows........ FECKERS came through the roof next time, and just nicked some tools. I had my outside lock on the garage "Bolt Cuttered" over chrismas last year when I slept over at the Ladeee's place. Not sure what to suggest, but as above....... Bike security seems to have some edge. I keep 3 bikes (all SORN'd and broken, ) bolted chained etc in the garage. Problem with some malicious tawts is they would as easily destroy, or come back another day with transport. AAAaaaaarrghh... it maddens me.

I had a garage broken into recently with my mk2 escort in, nothing taken- weird.
Maybe they broke in to see what was inside and are planning to return with a truck to weigh them all in with??

A bunch of travellers tryed to take the Hornet from its previous owner, they broke in threw the roof, smashed the rear window, and bent the break pedel at a 90¢ª. Didn't get it running so they just left it. They were kind enough to leave a pair of trainers and blood all over the boot There is a row of garages behind my friends house, every one has been broken into except hers (touchwood it wont). It has something stupid like 10 padlocks on the outside and 4 bars so you cant ram the doors. Wont say whats inside, but there is a lot more security. Even the roof has been secured.
