Ive been offered a K reg diesel astra estate. I think its the 1700 GM non turbo lump in it, base model with wind up windows e.t.c. Its done 150k and has 2 weeks MOT and 4 months TAX. Its being offered for the cost of the tax so I cant really lose out. Ive been told its in good nick bodily and mechanically but needs the cambelt doing and the gear linkage needs sorting as its very sloppy. I'm hoping to use it as a daily smoker as it would be safer and more economical than my mk4 escort. Get much more junk in the back of an estate too!
I love the escort but I don't feel that confident going up and down the motorways in it every day, it feels a bit flimsy and being a 1 previous owner car with low mileage its a shame to rack up mega miles and kill it. Better to have an old clunker for that! Besides, its got a few scabs underneath and a good winter with lots of salt on the roads will probably terminate the body before the next mot.
Anyone on the forum got any experience of diesel astras? Good/bad?

Non-turdblower = SLOW!!!
Even the turdo versions weren't that quick.
But if it's cheap (free?) then bite their hand off. I had a 1400 petrol mk3 that I ragged mercilessly and it was indestructible. Mega mileage, and wasn't even very rusty. Wish I'd kept it now.

Speed isnt really a problem, its going to be an abused daily driver. Its all about MPG and reliabilty!
Ive read up on them on carsurvey.org and they all seem to say they last very well, even when really abused. The 1400I petrol seems to be able of very ligh mileage too, 150,000+ Who would have thought it??

gear linkage should be easy to sort out, there quite a heavy car, so they don't get blown about too much! (unlike my micra which i sometimes feel i can tie string to the towing point and use it as a kite!!!) engines are pretty good, easy 200k+ with proper regular servicing. they rot on wheelarches, light cluster surrounds and boot floor, so if anywhere will give u mot problems its there. give it a good service when you change the belt and emmissions shouldnt be a problem, altho if they are, there are fuel addetives avalable, but be sure to get the engine good and hot before the test after adding it a couple days before!!!!

You can`t really go wrong for the money, they are good dependable old buses and I`ve never had any dramas with them, even 200,000 mile plus examples, not only that but they are still fairly in demand so you`ll probably find if you put it through the MOT and sell it in March when theres still 8 months on it you`ll be on profit.

Humm, profit on an old banger? It feels strange putting "profit" and "banger" in the same sentence!

Had a 1990 1.7D Vectra/Cavalier, super reliable but slooooow, sold with 230k on the clock, saw it in a bodyshop a year later after getting rear ended, was being repaired and prepped for respray,250k on it by then.

Reliable old buses - engines will go on and on provided they get oil changes now and again.
Also worth doing the tensioners with the timing belt as its very little added cost.
Keep an eye on the rear wheelarches and end of the sills for rust.
Interiors are tough as well, much better put together than Ford or French stuff.
EcoDiesel can help with emissions if you run it through the system a couple of times before the Mot, say a couple of tanks worth.
